Hey CFL Nesties,
Like spending time on the boards already? Want to lend a helping hand? Are you able to be supportive while being objective? Volunteering might be for you.
Don?t worry, we?re not trying to change the climate of the boards. The main responsibility of the moderators will be to control spam and advertising, but also to bring issues of trolling and harassment to our attention quickly, so the boards can be a fun and informative environment for everyone. As this has been an issue recently, we would like a Central Florida Nestie to be in close contact with us when inappropriate posts are made, as well as have the ability to delete these posts.
Think you have what it takes?
In order to become a volunteer moderator, you must:
*Be an experienced poster.
*Have a strong interest in The Central Florida Board.
*Plan to stick around. We?ll need the volunteers to commit to a few hours a week of reading and posting.
*Be accepting of other?s beliefs--even when they?re seriously wrong.
Do you fit the bill?
If so, answer the questions below and email your replies to moderators@theknot.com:
1. How long have you been active in community?
2. What board or boards are your favorites? Would you be willing to moderate any of these boards?
3. How often do you visit the boards and about how much time do you spend per visit?
4. Describe how you are already fulfilling a leadership roll on your favorite board.
5. What is the best way to handle disagreements on the boards?
6. How would you like to see The Knot/The Nest respond when there's a problem?
7. What is your username?
We greatly appreciate each and every application we get, but might not be able to respond to all of them. If we feel you?ll make a good moderator, we?ll be in touch.
Re: Central Florida Board Moderator
I completely agree. ?Now I guess it's time to break out the baby sitters since no one knows how to be a grown up. ? ?
Why? It seems like it would be a quicker way to alert the admins of all the losers that come here so THEY can take care of it.
Well, I hate to beat a dead horse but this IS a public message board. ?If someone that doesn't live in CFL wants to post here, I don't see any reason why they can't. ?It would be different if this was protected or something like that, but it isn't so why should we tell someone else to "go away"? ?If anyone is posting something that they don't want the world to know, then they shouldn't be posting it here. ?It's public and all can see it. ?I, for one, like to speak to others outside of this little town. ?I would hate for a "moderator" to come in and tell people that if you don't live in CFL you can't post here.....or even worse, shut this board down completely because certain people can't "play nice". ?
Overall this is just a BAD idea and I, for one, don't want to see it happen.?
OR.....we could be big girls and fight our own battles rather than playing tattletale every time someone posts something you dont agree with!
part of us wanted the moderator because people are leaving the board...eyecandi, leelah, steph, mrs. dmc....well I don't know if all of you "left" but you haven't really been posting for a couple of weeks.
So if we are going to be big girls, then come back and post! We miss you!
I have not left the board because it isn't being monitored. I have not left the board at all. No offense to anyone here, but I haven't seen anything worth responding to. I mean really, how many polls do we need to answer and I am not interested in what kind of shampoo people use.
I'm a fan of moderated boards, in the right circumstances. It requires a TEAM to moderate a board fairly, though, a single person needs to be able to bounce things off someone else, and really, WHO is on here THAT much to be able to handle moderating it by themselves? And why just this board?
Yep, there are trolls- but, the answer to that is for the Nest admin to grow some brains and start blocking IP addresses (and IP spoofers), rather than just deactivating troublesome profiles. And a board without a block option is absolutely stupid- you should always have that available. It takes care of things until admin can remove a profile.
Really, Nest Anni thinks this board is as big of a PITA as it has become lately, and doesn't want to deal with it all herself. Who could blame her. Fire the monkeys, Nest, and get a decent IT team- and life around here would be a lot easier for everyone but Nottest.
You make very good points, as usual
I didn't leave because of any of the trolls. I left because I needed a break. I have been lurking but, I agree with MrsDMC....there hasn't been anything lately to respond to. Again, no offense to you, but poll after poll did get pretty old.
Great observation. That goes for any board. I just don't see how a moderator can control peoples opinions.
I will use this thread as an example. Lets say the moderator agrees with you. Is she gonna delete this or ban the opposed users? That does not make it a public message board. That would make it a "lets all agree with Jacki's beliefs to avoid being banned board!"
Boy....That sounds super fun! Let's all be Stepford Wives!
If someone that doesn't live in CFL wants to post here, I don't see any reason why they can't. It would be different if this was protected or something like that, but it isn't so why should we tell someone else to "go away"?
Wait a second - so someone suggested that non-CFL nesties shouldn't be allowed to post here? Why??
IMO that''s not only absurd and unfair to legitimate nesties who don't live here but like to post occasionally (such as KappaUCF who used to live in Orlando), but it wouldn't even be effective WRT trolls. All the troll would have to do is create a new account (which they've done already) and enter "Orlando" in the location field.
I'm not opposed to the idea of a moderator per se, but I don;t think that will solve the troll problem either. A moderator can't be here 24/7. The troll would just figure out when the moderator is away from the board and post accordingly.
In five yeard on the knot/nest, I've seen my share of trolls who pretty much laugh at nest admins. IMO, nothing will ever change until they start tracking ISP's.
I didn't think that a moderator would delete a post or ban a person because as in your example agree with Jacki and not with everyone else. My impression was that they'd help maintain the peace. By "peace" I mean allowing people to disagree because even Stepford Wives don't always get along, however when that person becomes a nuisance and starts telling people that they are scum, should just die, or even bring in family memebers and children into the picture, that is when it should be removed.
Is that not what was done with all the fake profiles? They were insulting and impersonating individuals and thus they were banned.
I dont see where it says that only CFL residents will be allowed to post here???
Well, Annie is not going to find that person on this board. It is pretty clear that the majority here floats in the same boat.
Removing a nuisance poster doesn't solve a thing. They will be back. The more the nest removes them the more they will come back. It blows me away that these girls haven't figured that out by now. I totally agree with cmeon that it should be left in IT hands...not a regular CFL poster.
You would think that some would have learned by now not to post something that could be flameworthy unless they are willing to take the consequences. Mega handled it well...some of the others....not so much!
Oh...and I think Candi was referring to Jacki's comment about " all the losers that come here." I take that to mean the people from national boards who come to flame a controversial thread.
There have been some remarks before about people who dont live in CFL posting on this board. Seems like the only time it is an issue is when the non-cfl resident has a different opinion than the majority.
I must admit that I am baffled that some of you are stating that this board has been boring - of course it's been boring, you interesting people haven't been posting!! Seriously, if several people take a break from posting, this board isn't going to be as interesting! And beyond that, if you find the content of this board boring, why not either 1) post something you find interesting or 2) find a more interesting board?
I think that having a moderator could be helpful in our situation, provided that it is done correctly - it would have to be a person whose sole responsibility would be to alert the admins of problems (people who are breaking the rules by making personal attacks, etc.) so they can be taken care of quickly. I DO think that giving the mod the power to delete posts could turn bad quickly - yes, she could remove the troll posts, but it could quickly turn into a power trip, ie, exactly what you're saying with deleting posts the person doesn't agree with.
Having a block feature would be much better, but that's obviously not happening, so having a moderator with minimal powers seems to be our only option to having a less troll-y board.
Wow... so now this board isn't interesting enough for some of the "regulars" to post here? Well, here's a thought...make an interesting post yourself!! Then maybe you can liven up the board and not make it so dread awful.
I personally agree there needs to be someone monitoring this board for awhile to delete all the hateful posts. If you've read any of my posts in the past, I don't always agree with what someone says. But there is a way to disagree and there's a way to be scum. And recently, some of the non-cfl AND some of the cfl nesties have chosen the wrong way.
There were a lot of cfl nesties who didn't agree with MegaP but they didn't curse her out and call her names. I don't tolerate that crap in the real world, so why put up with it here?
Just my two cents.
I'm baffled also b/c I thought that those of you who were targeted on the fake profiles would be open to the idea. I do agree if moderated correctly as Jacki stated it might just work. Maybe it shouldn't be one of us. Maybe it should be The Nest to be assigned to correct the matter in a more timely matter since obviously the block feature is not looking promising.
But hey...what do I know? Apparently I thought wrong.
ITA! Doesn't mean it has to be all peaches n' cream, but theres a tasteful way to disagree and personally attacking someone and calling them an unfit mother (and that was probably one of the nicer things that were said) is just not something I think any of us should tolerate...
Ok Jacki....looking back I dont see where anyone called the board boring. I went through the first page of posts again, and still didn't see anything to respond too. I haven't read any books recently, have already told Steph I like Zach's room through a ::gasp:: secret email, already passed a congrats on to Jen for heathly Lily, and dont care to discuss anymore about Caylee Anthony sooooo, yeah, I have been hanging out on the 2nd tri board....but thanks for making that suggestion to find a more interesting board, I am one step ahead of ya.
As far as contributing with an interesting post....I dont like to talk about my personal life on this board for obvious reasons even though my personal life is wonderful and has no issues, just busy planning for our addition! I have been quite busy and guess what...Believe it or not, some of us are capable of having lives outside of this board!
If I see something that sparks my interest I will respond, if not I will move on. Keep posting your polls...This board just wouldn't be the same without them.
Alot of you are really Contradicting youselfs because on one hand you say you don't want us to all be stepford wives and not disagree, etc. But on the other hand we are suppost to shut up when the troll comes around?
I don't get it?!
I'm not going to sit back & listen to people bash Meg for being an unfit mother or calling her words that shouldn't be said just because of her situation. I'm not that type of person. If you don't like it don't tiptoe around it and say "other CFL nesties" or something. I'm sorry but I'm not going to freaking just sit around & say nothing about something I believe in, wouldn't that make me a "Stepford wife" something we don't want on this board?
It is a public message board & I agree but there is a certain limit to how much someone can or should have to take. Just like you all got mad when they pulled your kids into situations, this is the same with them pulling Megs kid & her life into it & getting personal. It's not right & if you don't want me on the board because I "stirred" a little trouble then let me know, because I'll gladly leave a place where I can't be myself or speak my opinions.
I'm a little late responding here, but I will answer.
I think that this board does just fine alerting the admins when there is a problem! In fact, like Chris said, I am sure they are getting sick of this board and really just don't want to deal with it.
Moderated boards suck. You always feel like you're being watched and you have to be oh so careful what you say.
If the board is going to be moderated, it definitely shouldn't be ONE CFL nestie. The nest should take some of the money they receive from all of the horrible ads on here and hire some impartial moderators. I'm sorry, but I don't know of one person on this board who could really have an unbiased opinion. I know some people that would get "the job" and go on a serious power trip.
It amazes me how much people let a silly message board get to them. I admit I am guilty of it myself and that is why I haven't been around lately. (Well and because of the "big brother" at work now.) I was letting the nonsense on this board really affect me. And why???? This isn't real life. Sure, I have made some wonderful IRL friends on here, but the board over all shouldn't affect my life like it was. So I just decided to stay away for a while.
So anyway, I don't agree with having moderators. Like others have said, the Nest needs to get the block feature working. Until then, if you don't like something said, just ignore it. If it really makes you that mad, just take a break from the board.
I do miss you girls, but I really can't be on here much at all during the day and I rarely have time in the evenings to be on since I don't get much time as it is to spend with my family. I'll try to pop on a little more often. I do talk to a lot of you through email, MySpace, etc. anyway.
So.....you weren't saying this board is boring, you were saying it's.....uninteresting? Not worth responding to? Didn't think there was much of a difference.
You make some good points! I just feel like the "ignore" tactic isn't working anymore, and neither is letting the admins take care of it - this past weekend is a perfect example - it took all weekend for the rule-breaking posts to be removed.
OMG Jacki... I am not gonna respond to every post with some lame BS answer just to get my post points up. What is the point in that, oh yeah....squeeeee we can get nesticles. Big F-in whoop. In case you may have forgotten, I have a JOB and I have been working extra hours lately to have some extra time when my baby comes. I have not had time lately to sit around and respond to posts that aren't relevant to me!!!
If I dont have a response I am not gonna give one. Why is that such a big deal??? Sitting here responding to every post I missed since the last log in can take an hour. If that is all I have I would rather go on the baby boards and get some info that is useful in my life right now. Sorry to say that figuring this baby thing out is a bit more important than answering a dozen polls.
If some of you girls continue to use the fighting tactic to get rid of the trolls than have at it. Eventually, I am sure it will take a toll on ya. I choose to ignore it and if the board is plastered with troll nonsense I will just avoid the nest in general.
MrsDMC, I don't think anyone is saying that this board should be the most important thing in your life right now. If you choose to spend your free time at baby boards, then go right ahead.
But I was a little nerved by your comment about how uninteresting the board had become and then you made a sarcastic remark about the polls the girls post. There was no need to put anyone down just because you don't like to come here anymore.
Don't you see how your statement could be taken as a diss to the board and the active posters?
I just get so pissed off when girls come back who haven't been on in awhile and complain about how the board is so bad now and there's so many fights. But they only choose to post when there is a fight! I don't see any posts from them when girls are asking about doctor recs, or good restaurants or something joyous that happened to them. Don't come around again when there's controversy just to put people down.
I was about to say pretty much the same thing, so I'll let ro's articulate words do the talking.
