frozen compost..

What do I do if my compost became frozen? Can I still add stuff to the top of it even if I can't turn it?

or should I just hold off until it defrosts in a few months?

Re: frozen compost..

  • Just keep adding stuff on top. It will compact a lot when it thaws, and then you can turn it.
  • I suggest still digging food in, if at all possible. Or putting on your scraps on top and then adding more browns to cover the food.  You don't want your food scraps to attract animals and get eaten. Don't sweat about not being able to turn the whole pile.

If it's frozen, if your compost is enclosed, and if you are not composting meat, you should have any problems attracting animals anyway.

But yeah, I just pile it on throughout the winter and when the spring thaw comes, it all gets back to decomposing.

  • Yes, you can still add stuff to the top.

Do you have a pitch fork?  The top of mine is frozen too, but I used a pitch fork yesterday and turned over the top 1/4.
