Thinking about moving to Sagle/Sandpoint area.....

Hi, I am currently in Northern California. DH and I are talking about moving to the area, we'd like to start a family in a few years and in our current location, prices make that almost impossible.

I was interested in finding out  more about the area and how the job market looks and how the rental and buying markets are.

If anyone can help me out and give me any useful information you have, I would really appreciate it.

 Thanks.

Re: Thinking about moving to Sagle/Sandpoint area.....

  • Hey, I'm in Coeur d Alene(CDA) a short ways south.  It is beautiful here and always so much to do if you're an outdoorsy person.  The housing market in CDA is a little inflated as well as in Sandpoint, but CDA housing prices have taken a dive and Sandpoint seems to be the "new" place that everyone wants to move to, so the housing market is probably going up there.  The job market is not very good...just like everywhere I guess.  Depends on what you do.  Rental prices are really low right now.  We were renting a house worth 180000 for $850/month (1600 sq feet).  We just bought a house for 160000, 4bed/2bath, 1400 sq feet, and 0.17 acres.  Monthly mortgage 1150(including taxes and everything).  Let me know if you need to know anything else!

  • Thanks for that info! I am in the accounting/tax business, currently.

That is really outstanding that your mortgage is 1150, I am paying 1350 a month in rent for a 2 bedroom....

I am hoping that when we move out there, the prices will still be as good. I would like to find some land and build on it.

    Thanks again for the info!

  • My dh and I moved here (to CDA) about a year ago. We were both born and raised in So Cal and I went to college in Nor Cal. I absolutely love it here! I get to drive by the lake everyday on my way to work! The weather has been an adjustment, but by far the biggest adjustment has been the "locals". I'd safely guess that 70% of the population here are California transplants and the "locals" don't appreciate more Californians coming. The reason I say "locals" is because most of the people that were born and raised here are the friendliest, most wonderful people I know and the transplants that now consider themselves "locals" have nothing nice to say about anyone. I get tired of hearing Idaho constantly compared to California and hearing the "locals" constantly badmouth Californians. We, like you, moved here for a more family friendly community to start a new life and a new way of life. If you do move this way my advice to you would be to get your license plates changes ASAP and when people ask where you're from just smile and say "South of Boise" and make sure you say it like Boy-Cee, not Boy-Zee. :) Good luck!
  • Haha, yeah isn't that stupid?  I was dissappointed to see how rude some people are here.  I'm from southern Idaho, and have only been here a year.  I come from a small town, about 1/5 the size of CDA, so CDA feels like a big city to me  That would make me laugh if someone said south of Boise, cuz there isn't anything south of Boise except wasteland.  Say East (or west) of Boise.

  • South of Boise = Wasteland = California :)

Thanks for that info! Is it that way all over Idaho, or just in CDA? I have heard that most other states don't care for Californians... I'll keep all that in mind though.

  • I can't speak about all of Idaho and it really isn't that bad in CDA. You find your niches. Like at my church we joke about it a lot and occasionally the pastor will say, "before you sit down shake your neighbor's hand and tell them where in CA you're from."
  • That is really funny!

My DH had another question he wanted to me find out, what are the drivers like on the roads in Idaho? Are they courteous or crazy?

  • Depends...I think not very courteous...some are.  I grew up in a small down where if someone was backing out of a space, you stop and let them no matter what.  Here, if you start to back out people go flying past and lay on their horns.  Totally irritates me.  Most people are good about letting you merge and what not.

  • Okay, good to know. I would guess with so many Californian transplants, there might be a few of the bad drivers coming from over here to over there. lol.
