How much $ does it cost to add a deadbolt to front door?

I just bought a new house and the front door only has 1 key lock. I would like to add a deadbolt to it for safety. How much should that cost me so I know I will not be overcharged?

TIA!

Re: How much $ does it cost to add a deadbolt to front door?

  • My uncle is a locksmith and just did all of our exterior locks. He charges the cost of the lock (+10% for most customers), and $50/hour for installation. It took him 2 1/2 hours to do all 3 exterior passage sets (that included time to drill holes on the doors and jambs).
  • Thanks. Do I buy a lock and then just get a locksmith to install it? Or do I buy from the locksmith? I am clueless!

  • We had him order the locks for us, but you could always pick one up for yourself. We did the math and buying them ourselves would have saved us less than $10 a lock, he orders so many that he got a better deal than we could - even with the 10% markup.
  • I added one to my front door. It was about $10 for the set to make the hole. (It attaches to your drill and I picked it up at Lowes.) And whatever the cost of the deadbold was. I had NO idea what I was doing but there are instructions. Starting the hole in the door was the worst part but not too bad. There are adjustments you'll have to make to get the deadbolt to line up with the hole you create in the doorframe. It probably took me about an hour.

Call a Locksmith and pay the $150 it'll cost to come out, key alike and install the deadbolt. The Schlage deadbolt will run about $45. If you need to buy jigs and hole saws, plan on another $50, $10 to rekey to existing key. Your up to $100+. Then you're going to spend 3 hours doing it if you've never done one before. The reasons there isn't a deadbolt on it are: It's basically an interior door - an exterior door will have to breached first - protect those doors. Adding a second hole will defeat the fire blocking capabilities.
  • A locksmith would cost $50 for installation service and $45 for the deadbolt lock. All in all you would be cost around $100 for it.
  • A agree with adamcarrick12 , the cost of installing the deadbolt lock is about $100 but it also depends upon which locksmith you are choosing for installation. Some can charge more than that and some can charge less.So consider hiring the one who is specialized as well as charge you in your budget.
