Newb Intro and Question!

Hi, I'm new to this board (usually hang out at D&R).  My H and I are planning on building a garden this year.  He's the more experienced gardener of the two of us - me having what is generally referred to as a black thumb.  I have so far managed to kill both ivy and aloe plants.  Go me.

ANYHOW, here's the question part ... our backyard is on the smallish side with a steep hill at the very back.  What we want to do is "terrace" the hill in some way into small garden plots.  We are thinking of using wood to build frames above ground and then filling in each plot to level.

Has anyone else tried this or even seen any resources on it?  We are aware that we need to be careful not to cause erosion on the hill but I cannot find any other real instructions or guidelines.
