maybe moving to Richmond

Hello VA nesties!  We may be relocating to Richmond in the near future, and I wanted to say hi & find out some things about the area - good places to live, schools, anything to avoid...I really know nothing about the area at all!  Also, I may be able to stay at home with our daughter if the plan works, so do any of you know of anything fun we can do during the day?

Thanks again!!!

Re: maybe moving to Richmond

  • Welcome to the board! Richmond is a really nice city. There are good neighborhoods pretty much everywhere, depending on what you're looking for. Short pump is kind of trendy, the downtown area (the Fan, Chuch Hill) are really being built up a lot lately, and there are a ton of other suburbs. We live out in Mechanicsville, which right on the northeast side of Richmond and is very quiet. I know there are a few girls on here that are new to the area, so they might be able to help out more with housing in different areas. I can't really help you with the schools thing cause I don't have kids, but maybe somebody else can chime in  ;-)  I do have some mommy friends, and I know they have a really active online group (Richmond Mommies) that organizes a lot of playdates and moms night out type stuff.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

    Jen

  • I live in Short Pump. I'm not one of them, but there tend to be a lot of stay at home moms around here and I know of a lot of playgroups and other things for moms/kids.

I like it here because we are close to a lot of shopping, food, etc. and easy access to the interstates while still not too far from the city. But it is a very much a suburb with lots of new/newer housing developments, chain stores, etc. but there are some unique shops and some stores like Trader Joes, REI, HomeGoods, where there is only 1 in the Richmond area.  Schools in short pump are very good although can be competitve with grades, etc. and 13 of the schools just won excellence awards.

Hanover/Mechanicsville is more quiet as mentioned above with great schools as well and there is also the southside/midlothian area.

A lot of it can depend on where your husband would be working. Hanover to the southside could easily be 45 minutes or more just depending on locations and traffic.  There are also tolls especially southside to downtown.

  • I agree with the above statement : ) Also I live in Short Pump I teach in the West End....Henrico, Hanover, and Chesterfield Co Schools are all very good and competitive since they are so close to each other...I could give you more specific info on Henrico schools....Chesterfield is having major budget issues....everyone else is have budget issues also (of course) but Chesterfield seams to be the worst...Class sizes are a lot larger there right now but that could change next year
