Poll: Are you the only gay person at your workplace?

Or if you work in a large setting, the only one in your division/department/etc?

Re: Poll: Are you the only gay person at your workplace?

  • Nope. My wife works in the same division. Stick out tongue

Seriously, though... there are a few of us around here (2 others I can think of offhand). I'm curious to know if any more people will "out" themselves to us now that a message got sent around to the whole division (~200 people, gulp!) about us having babies. Hmm...

  • Yes.

  • I am not, there are probably four or five of us that are out in my location and one or two in each of our regional offices. My wife works with me too (at least she does for a couple more weeks until she starts her new job).

  • Well, my immediate department is only a few people - so going by that, I'm the only one.

But I am definitely not the only one if you widen the scope a bit.  There is another gay person who sits within eyesight of my desk, lol.  And there are a handful of others who I and my coworkers interact with regularly (mostly men).  My office is very diverse, in nearly every sense of the word.

My last two jobs - I was the only one.  Back in Pittsburgh, there was one other out gay woman at my job.

  • I believe I'm the only out gay person in my department...though my department is 300+ so its possible that there are one or two others that are out and I just dont know.  Similarly, even though i'm out, there might be people in my department who dont know.
  • I am not the only one. There are several people in my program.  And DW works in the next layer out.
  • There are a few male residents that rotate through in the clinic where I work and 1 other male social worker in my department.

In the organization as a whole, there are quite a few that I know of/suspect - though it seems to be far more men than women.

When I started working here all of the docs that I work with had to tell me about their gay realtives. 1 gay daughter, 2 gay sisters, 1 gay neice. Stick out tongue

  • I have 1 trans coworker (who replaced a bisexual coworker).
  • Oh and this:

is hilarious! I was in a meeting once with the head of another organization who said, out of the blue: "Oh, did you know my assistant's also [drops voice to a whisper] gay? And my daughters a [pause and wince] lesbian."

I think I know who you are counting, there are a few more...in fact, a woman just out of the blue started talking to me about her girlfriend while I was up in Admin last week...we are out there! Big Smile

  • In my department, yes, but my department is only 5 people.  The agency is about 550 people but we're in multiple buildings across several counties.  So of the people I see now and again I know of 2 gay men.  But the parking lot has several equality bumper stickers so I'm assuming there are a few lesbians running around here somewhere :-p

  • My office is only 4 others and I'm the only one.

My grad program there are 5 of us.

In my doula community I only know of one other doula.

  • At my last place of employment I thought I was the only one, but there ended up being 3 of us.

  • I am the only one. I have 5 people in my office. However, only one person I work with knows I'm gay.

I work for a very small, very religious company, and NO it's not a church.

  • In my immediate team of seven people, I'm the only gay person. (I have had my suspicions about one of them, but I think she would never say anything to me and isn't out to anyone at work, if she is in fact gay.)

In my larger department of 200+, I personally know of at least three, but we're pretty spread out so I really don't know.

In my total agency of 650,000, yeah, I'm sure there are one or two more :)

  • Of the 50 some odd people in the building there are tons of gays,  Our assistant principal, librarian, and probably about 6 or 7 teachers are gay and out.  We have a very active gsa so on top of the teachers there are about 10 students that are out as well.

  • In my department I am the only one, but in the next department there are three that I know of. I am assuming there are probably more but I just don't know them. ( and I am the only one on the night shift)

I am SO envious of this!  I don't know if I posted anything about this, but I recently found out my school system fires teachers if they tell their students that they're GLBT.  Yikes.  I sort of thought the union would have my back?  No.

  • I am the only one in my office, but there are many throughout my organization. There are a lot more gay men than there are women though (and the population where I work is about 50% male/female).

  • mandykatie, that is so sad :(

I'm the only one in my department (about 25) but I know there's a few more in the building and heaven knows my university is pretty "pro"-gay.

  • While we're talking about it- Am I the only one who thinks Lady GaGa is a total douche for cancelling at the Purdue concert after BOTH opening acts had played?
  • Well, I am--but then again, I'm the only person at my workplace.
