Since its insanely slow...
...please give me your opinions on a possible problem that I may or may not be dealing with in the near future.
I went on two job interviews in the past few days. They are for your standard admin. position at small, local businesses. My interviews went really well and both places want to make decisions within a week. My possible dilemma arises if both places make offers.
Here is the gist of the situation:
Job #1 - 40hr/week, 9-5 M-F, slightly higher pay
Job #2 - 30hr/week (eventually becoming FT), various hours and Sat hours, slightly lower pay (around $3/hour less)
The problem:
I absolutely adore job #2. I'm going back for my follow up "working interview" this Friday. I can really see myself loving this job and I really liked the people who worked there. Job #1 has a really nice staff as well, but I just didn't get the same vibe at that place like I did at job #2.
My question... which would you choose? Money or happiness?
Re: Since its insanely slow...
Happiness matters more than money, but happiness comes from a few different things, not just the first impression you got from the job and staff. Since you said you liked job 1's staff, you might eventually be just as happy there with the people as you would be with job 2. You know how you might get a great first impression of some guy and think to yourself that you'd love to date him? Best to wait and see if your feelings remain that way after a week or a month... and as often as not, you end up thanking your lucky stars that you didn't jump the gun with that loser. Could be the same thing here. ;-)
As for what exactly you would be doing, it seems like it would be about the same - "standard admin. position," right? So no real difference there.
And then there's the question of scheduling. Putting the idea of full-time aside for now (hey, perhaps you would prefer NOT to work full-time, especially if you can get health insurance through your husband), you have to ask yourself whether you would like to have a set schedule - 9-5 M-F - with set "off" times, like knowing you have your weekends and evenings free. Or would you rather have a bit of variety in your schedule, so that some days you sleep in, some days you can do errands, but that also you are occasionally missing dinner or a weekend excursion because you are working?
For me, it comes down to the scheduling question, since the first impression could be wrong (and you liked both places anyway), and you are doing basically the same job in each place. Would you prefer to have a regular schedule or more variety (and less control)?
As for the money, I would say if you still prefer job 2, I would make it clear to them that you want to go to them but that you'd also like them to do a little price matching. I understand if a small business can't up their hourly rate by $3, but maybe they could split the difference ($1.50). If you have a job offer from job 1, they might do this. Good luck and keep us updated!
The other thing with job #2 is that it would give you more time to work on your business. If the days/times you'd need to work will be left somewhat to your discretion it may be worth the smaller paycheck.
If you get offers from both definitely let job #2 know about the better offer and give them a chance to counter it.
I'll try to make this short.
Job #1 sounds safe.
Job #2 sounds more interesting.
I think it depends on what you WANT. It sounds like you want Job #2 and Job #1 could be similar to the job you left a few months ago.
Have you been jobless all this time? Forgive me if I'm wrong but I thought you left your last job due to suffocation and not being able to express your creativity. (Sorry if this is wrong!) If so, I dont think that extra 10 hours is going to make a huge difference because you're still getting more hours than you are at the present time. (It seems to me that going from 0-30 you wouldnt feel a hit like you would going from 40-30).
I'm starting to think I'm not making sense and I'm babbling so I'll end it here.
What do you WANT.
And what do you WANT in life. Which job do you see as having the most potential and making you the most happy? Go with your instinct. Oh, also it probably wouldn't hurt to ask Todd what his thoughts are too. He might know you better than you know yourself.
