Visitor with a question

Hi ladies.  I am usually over on the Military Nesties board, but I need some info about San Antonio.  My H will be there for training for 11 weeks.  We are looking for lodging info.  He can't stay on post, so we are trying to find a decent area with a decent price.  He also needs to be with in 20-30 min of Ft Sam.  Also, how long would it take him to drive from the airport to Ft Sam?  Can anyone here give me any info or insight?  Thank you so much.

Re: Visitor with a question

  • The airport is really close to Ft Sam. It will take him MAYBE 10 minutes to get to the airport from Ft. Sam (assuming you leave Ft Sam on the Harry Wurzbach side) on a REALLY bad day. If you exit from the Walters exit, it will take much longer. I live in Schertz which is on north 35 just outside 1604. That area would keep you within your time frame. A lot of people recommend the Stone Oak area, but that's going to take a lot longer to get to Ft Sam and the traffic is horrendous there. There's a cute area right by Ft Sam on Harry Wurzbach called Oakwell Farms. Alamo Heights/Terrel Hills would also be close to the base. I'd just try to stay away from staying right on 410 or south 35 because those areas are pretty shady. Hope that helps some and if you find an area you're interested in, feel free to ask about it too!

  • Thank you so much.  He found three hotels he likes.  Two are on River Walk, but I'm not sure about how traffic would be getting back and forth. The other hotel is near the airport. He wanted something with restaurants nearby.  The kids and I will be visiting a few times, so he wants somewhere that has things for us to do nearby, too.

  • The Riverwalk to Ft Sam is about 10 minutes down Broadway.  I'd stay downtown if I were he rather than the airport b/c then he wouldn't ever have to deal with highway traffic.

Yeah, but downtown traffic is not so good either. And if you don't live here, it's confusing with all the one-way streets. Since it's temporary, personally I'd stay near the airport. But that's just my opinion. :)

  • Thanks, ladies.  I think we have decided he is going to stay his first week near the airport.  He'll check things out and decide from there after he gets familiar with the area.  Thank you for all the input.
