C+P & Poll: What's your area's "walk score?"

Re: C+P & Poll: What's your area's "walk score?"

  • It's no surprise to me that my neighborhood gets a score of 95.
  • Mine is much lower than I would have thought it to be.  I blame it on the fact that it is defining transit as subway and not bus.

Also, I'm majorly LOLing over the nearest book store that it found, since it's actually a sex toy shop.

  • 42.  WAY higher then I thought since they decided to run the new freeway right through the walking paths.  But I guess the fact that we have walking paths at all bumps the score up higher.

And yes, my list of nearby places is a bit off as well.  For instance they're saying I have to walk 0.29 miles to get to the closest coffee shop, but I'm looking out my window and I clearly see a coffee shop across the street!  Also the nearest grocery store is a gas station.  Not exactly a huge selection there!

  • mine's only a 57..and the average for the city i live in is 71

  • Mine is a 0.  I'm not surprised.  I live rurally.  There are benefits to where we live, but the ability to walk places is not one of them unfortunately.

  • I got a 60; I think that's probably a little inflated, though.  Some of the stores it lists aren't there anymore, and I wouldn't feel comfortable walking to the area some of them are in.

Where I used to live gets a 69 and was a much safer area.  I wish I could go back in time and walk more there!

  • I got a 20 which is no great shock.  To top it off, pretty much everything in walking distance is either a fast food restaurant or home improvement store.

  • 28!!! But I think it's better than that because we literally use the train system all the time and live .04 miles from the station (it's behind us)

  • 100!

    I *heart* our neighborhood.  Smile

  • mine says 45, but there's no way I'd walk to any of the places around here.  It would require walking along and across a very very busy street (with a 55mph speed limit) that has no sidewalks.  So while the grocery store is really close, I drive so that I stay alive.

I'm pretty surprised at how high that is, too. The nearest "bookstore" for us is an adult toy store, I don't think the "theater" is actually a theater, the grocery store they mention is a cheapy dollar store, and there isn't sidewalk to half the other places mentioned. Oh, and although we do have bus stops every 10 feet, our "transit data" was considered unavailable. Lame.

This surprises me not at all. There is nothing within walking distance other than a bank (that I don't bank at), bars, and a dollar store. Well, the grocery store is only a mile and a half away, but it would be hard to walk that far with a weeks worth of groceries.

  • 94, we freaking love it here.
  • 80, but that's because most of the places are between .3 and .5 miles away. I love our place. Even though we moved out of the city, we can still walk a bunch!
  • We are a 54.  I hate suburbia!

  • Mine is a 0.  We live in the country and love it.  We have lots of farms nearby to get local meat & produce; we just can't walk there!
  • 34, no big surprise there. I live in the 'burbs, and even if I lived in downtown Houston it still wouldn't be that high.

  • Mine is 48. Really the only places we walk are the grocery store, Dairy Queen, a coffee shop and a thrift store. It's nice to live within walking distance of a grocery store - we take advantage of that a lot.
  • This is interesting!  thanks for posting.

We scored a 42--our city average was a 49, which actually seems high to me (and our relative score seems relatively low.)  We have a nicer grocery store 1 mile from our house that we fully take advantage of.  We have a healthy foods supermarket (Earth Fare) at about the 1.5 mile mark, we have car service station, gelato shop, coffee shops (though we don't drink coffee), stationery store, shoe store, ladies clothing store, home improvement store, italian restaurant, walgreens, science museum, all within the 2 mile mark.  Oh, and we're less than .75 of a mile from a city and national park--both of which have a TON of walking trails/nature paths (which I would think would count for something that they didn't take into account at all).  And fortunately, most of those are accessible via sidewalks or less traveled secondary streets--dh and I frequently take advantage of this opportunity.

  • 32, and I'm surprised its that high. About 1.5 miles away there's a Chevron, a Chinese restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, a really awful bar, the drivers license place and a few car repair shops. Woo hoo.

I'm so braving the rain and cold to walk down and back up the big arse hill for that!

  • We are 23. I am not surprised. I live in bike-nation not walk-nation.

BUT I am laughing because our entire list of "coffee shops" aren't places to buy coffee. They are the pot shops.

  • 95 - I love our little town! :-)  I'm from the boonies originally so I really love and appreciate being about to walk to so many places.

Honestly, if you care about this when looking for a place to live, you need to try it for yourself.  It's a nice idea, but at least for my house, the scoring system was highly flawed.  Some of the "nearest" listings are unsafe or even illegal to walk to, but there are other options that are walk-able.

  • Mine got a t 63, which sounds about right to me.  We can walk to the grocery store, video store, and several restaurants.  But if you want something specific, like a bookstore or liquour store, you have to drive.  We do have tons of walking paths, which is great for our dog.

  • 71, very walkable. although most of the places we walk to are in the neighboring zip code which requires us to either walk over or below a freeway and i hate that.
  • 11 out of 100. this isn't a surprise to me either.

  • 60 - somewhat walkable

but not really - I'm surprised it's that high to tell you the truth.   :(

  • Our house got a score of 43, but even that I think is a bit inflated. Some of the things listed as close by - grocery store, coffee shop, library - aren't exactly what they imagine them to be.
