sorta GL related....In the Middle is a horrible horrible tv show

All this family does is eat fast food in the car or in front of the TV. Are we really condoning this? Seriously, it's been on for less than 2 minutes and we've seen them eat burgers in front of the TV and then the next day the dad comes home with a bag of fast food for dinner again.

  • It's a sitcom. I think you are taking it WAY too seriously. I find that show hilarious!
  • I feel ya. It used to be that there were scenes of the family around a dinner table in every episode. Think about as far back as Leave it to Beaver, to as recently as Full House (as far as family shows go). I don't even remember an episode of the sitcoms I watched growing up featuring the families going to resteraunts or having fast food.  I think it's disturbing just becuase these shows are supposed to feature what real life is like, but through rose colored glasses. If burgers in the car is now something typical, I'm sad Sad

  • Unfortunately I think it's just mirroring life.  The Omnivore's Dilemna said something like 60% of Americans eat their meals in cars.  Ick!  I only eat in a car (A) on a long road trip to visit DH's in-laws in Upstate NY.  If we stopped at restaurants for every meal we'd never get there, and it's an 8 hour drive already (B) Snacks while driving to the Farmer's Market, which is almost always an apple and water.  But think of how many families wolf down dinner from McD's on the way to soccer practice or whatever?  Too many.

  • This show reminds me of Rosanne, the whole premise is that it's real people not beautiful actors in expensive houses. The reality is for most people working two jobs that fast food/processed food is a main part of their every day diet. Hence the huge rates of obesity and diabetes.

  • the family on this show is lower middle class. the mom is a used car salesperson and the father lost his job in last night's show. i highly doubt they can afford to feed 2 adults and 3 kids organic food on one income. besides it is a sitcom.

  • This was my point!

Jamie Oliver has a great cookbook out about how to cook simple food at home. I agree with him that part of the problem with people buying processed foods is they just don't know how to cook low cost meals.

  • Roseanne featured working parents (sometimes out of work), and they ate dinner together as a family at the table.

Maybe they didn't eat organic/local foods, but they didn't eat out and ate on the cheap.  There was an episode where Roseanne taught a home ec class about budget shopping for groceries.

I find "In the Middle" to be depressing.  It has its moments, but I quit watching it.

  • H worked on this show.  I've never watched it but he thinks it's funny.  It is sad how people eat in this country these days.  Heck, even when I was a kid we usually ate in front of the TV, but that's mostly because we were never able to eat as a family.  My Mom would cook and the food would be available for you when you were done studying, back from practice, before leaving for practice, off of work, or before going back to work.  But we still never ate fast food!  Probably a perk of living in a town with no fast food places, though.
