Born in the USA

Was a popular song, but that's not why it's famous.  Mr. Reagan gave it lasting power, when in a example of pure political stupidity, someone in Ronald Reagan's camp who didn't listen to the lyrics decided to pick it up for his presidential campaign.

It's not a patriotic song.  It's a song about a vet from the Vietnam war, and his life.  It's not a pretty picture and "Born in the USA" is a condemnation of that war and the treatment of it's vets.

Having said all of that and having a huge respect and appreciate (I have a couple of his first albums) for Bruce Springsteen and his music (which was covering the plight of the average blue collar life when the 80s were flying high from Wall Street glamour), I will say that I don't think he sounds 1/2 as good as he used to and it might be time for him to just retire or  to stop trying to hit the high notes.  Even Elton John stopped trying to do that.

Born to Run is my favorite.  BUT, I love the lyrics.  The cover by Melissa Etheridge (herself a huge Bruce afficianado, she says he inspired her to play the guitar) is amazing.

Re: Born in the USA

  • I never knew the lyrics to that song. I do know the lyrics to Born in East LA, however.
    ..
  • Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up

    [chorus that everyone knows].

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

    [chorus that everyone knows].

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says "Son if it was up to me"
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said "Son, don't you understand"

I had a brother at Khe Sahn fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone

He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go

    Born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
    Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
    Born in the U.S.A.
    Born in the U.S.A.
    Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A.image
