Recipe for Liquid Laundry Detergent??

I want to make my own laundry detergent but I can't fathom using powder.  I wash all clothes in cold and don't know if the powder would work right.

Anyone have a recipe for liquid?  Or any suggestions??  Also, has anyone made their own fabric softener - liquid or otherwise?

Re: Recipe for Liquid Laundry Detergent??

  • Here is a list of several different recipes, powder and liquid, http://tipnut.com/10-homemade-laundry-soap-detergent-recipes/ (sorry I can't make it a link)

About the fabric softener, I just use vinegar in the rinse cycle and sometimes wool dryer balls in the dryer.  There is also a recipe on the Duggar's website that explains how to use regular fabric softener to make your own "dryer sheets" and a few other options.

  • I have lots of info on making it in my blog and a link to the Tip Nut recipes that PP mentioned.

I don't use fabric softener. I just have never found is necessary since tumble drying softens clothes. Some people put vinegar in their wash as a softener alternative.

For the dryer, we use wool dryer balls and don't over dry. The balls help with softness and the not over-drying helps with static. Also, choosing natural fiber clothes over synthetics is a HUGE way to combat stactic.

  • I'm not quite there yet with making my own detergent (I just got DH to switch to using 7th generation, though, so it's a good start) but we do use vinegar in the wash instead of laundry detergent and it works great! It even gets the yucky smell out of older towels!
