Screw you grad school

I'm a little more than two weeks out from my defense and the following occurred today:

1. One of my committee members has not been receiving all my e-mails.  So I need to resend everything.

2. A petition the grad school originally said I didn't need they now say I do need.  I think I have two days to get it to them.  And I am not local to the school anymore, so I can't just run around campus, then drop the form off.

I hate this week.

Re: Screw you grad school

  • grad school does blow.

  • Wee, I concur.

There was a major change to my program this time last year. Classes are still in the process of being approved and given official numbers, added to the program of study, etc.

The result is th at I graduate in May, have a research proposal due next week required for graduation, but still am not a candidate for graduation. I have been chasing the paperwork trail for months now. I have been assured that since it is the School of Nursing's and University's issue I will graduate, but I still am not convinced.

  • And now they just answered a question with information I already know.  If they won't accept this petition by fax or something, I'm going to have to pay someone to go beat them up (since I'm too far away to do that).

i am glad to hear this happened to someone else, too.  my parents think i am going to a diploma mill and getting a masters in life experiences, with all the screwups of my program.

classes not being available until 10 days before they begin -- who does that?!  my school.

  • It is the worst at the end, but beats working a 8-5 job any day of the week <-says lady at work while H is still at home sleeping.

  • And here I was debating about going to grad school. Guess my crappy BA in English will have to suffice.
  • We also went through a massive program change, but everyone who came in under the old program was allowed to remain in it rather than trying to conform to the new one (which would have increased our time in school).  That's been another source of annoyance where the grad school is concerned.

  • Yes, it does happen else where. Last year spring semester, the unit hours were wrong on one of our classes. To make it up the SON had us register for a 700 level special study class to make the rest of the units up.

Wrong. The University told them to request an additional section of the original class so we could register for 2 sections, get our 4 correct units and be able to sit for national boards.second

Now they have to petition and all this crap to drop 700 level class and add the  section. Ohandplusalso petition to fix the class we took last summer to fix its course number and title as well. And may make it so we can graduate. By May 21st.

And that's why this situation sucks even harder: It's the end and I already work an 8-5 job.

If I don't get real clarification soon, I'm probably going to need to take the afternoon off to get it straightened out.

  • Good luck FG. My BIL is having similar difficulties in defending his thesis, he just found out his adviser has been out since late last year. So his defense has been pushed back from this weekend to next month.

  • Well crap, it's looking like I won't be defending soon.  They're adamant about having original signatures.  No faxes or scans.  Unless I have a week or so to get this done, there's no way I can get this done.
  • There were changes in my program, too. Fortunately I was grandfathered in under the existing regime from when I started. The program now is practically unrecognizable from when I started. It is all I/O and health psych now, but when I was there it was very quantitative-focused.

  • Yes, original signatures are a BIG deal. Double check if they will accpt blue ink. I had to go back because one of my committee members signed in blue and they only accepted black. <- FUN.
    image
  • one of the professors didn't show up for class last week because the program advisor got the dates wrong.

i feel like i am in kindergarten, not grad school.

  • hmo - it is all the same. The gossip, the drama, etc. I was hoping the snacks would get better.
    image
  • Crisis momentarily averted.  They will accept the form next week, so much overnight mailing is going to occur.

I think I'll just tell everyone to sign in black ink just in case.

And have I mentioned that I still haven't been sent a new copy of the screwed up form they sent me a couple of weeks ago?

  • They may prefer blue (my boss does, but she makes up weird shoit and calls them rules). I would call the grad school and double check.
