Ok ladies...give me you best "tours" of the PDX area!

My parents are coming into town next Thurs-Sunday and I want to give them the best tour of PDX. They've been to Southern OR many times, and my mom has been to the area I live in years ago (her old company  ironicall has an office on the same street I work on...weird!) They weren't stoked on us moving here, but I want them to fall in love with it in the few short days they are here. I don't know Portland well enough quite yet. DH's mom was in town 2 weeks ago and she's easy to please.

What are your best "tours" for out-of-towners? Fave places to get a great feel of Portland? Fave restaurants? Breakfast places? We live on the MAX so we love taking it downtown, but I'd be up for driving, too. I have my trust Garmin to get me to whatever destination, but I don't know what destinations to go to!

I don't know if I want to do the coast. As gorgeous as it is (we went last weekend) I don't know if I want to do the drive, and it didn't seem like there was all that much to do unless you rec. a fun cutesy town to visit.

Ok...GO!

  • DH and I haven't been here very long, but we like Washington Park it's beautiful and it contains the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japanese Garden, International Rose Test Garden, World Forestry Center Discovery Museum, Portland Children's Museum, and Hoyt Arboretum.  Seaside is a cute coastal town, with some unique shopping and a beautiful beach.  Mother's is a fun unique Portland restaurant (my parents loved it when we went there).  Powell's City of Books is pretty impressive to most people.  The Portland Saturday Market is fun.  Multnomah Falls is beautiful we just took my brother in law there last week while he was visiting...  I've heard OMSI is really cool but we haven't been there.  I'm sure our Portland ladies will have some more amazing ideas!

  • Breakfast: Beesaw's in NW

Breakfast/lunch: Veritable Quandary, St. Honore Boulangerie (a bit out of the way on NW Thurman but so delicious!, you could combine it with a walk in Forest park by going to the lower Macleay park entrance, and finding your way to Pittock Mansion from there).

Dinner: South Park, Red Star, Andina

    Things to do:

    - Definitely drive out to the gorge. From exit 18 past Troutdale you can drive the old Columbia River Highway which has many beautiful waterfalls along the way. Of course a stop at Multnomah Falls is a must, but to me Latourell Falls and Bridal Veil falls are definitely worth a stop too.

    - It's not really the season for the outdoor gardens so I don't know if I'd take them there now. But you can get a good view of the city from the Rose Garden. What kind of things do they like? You could do a wine tasting tour and go towards Dundee, Forest Grove, and that area. Or you could stop by the Evergreen Aviation museum in McMinnville to see the Spruce Goose.

    - You could drive up to Timberline Lodge and have lunch there. If they're fit, you could rent snowshoes and go snowshoeing around Trillium Lake.

    Thanks ladies! Keep em coming!

They used to be outdoorsy, but my mom has terrible knees and 3 screws and a plate in her ankle...so no go on the outdoors stuff. But I think a little wine tasting is in order, especially since the drives are gorgeous!

I second Besaw's and Mother's Bistro for breakfast. St. Honore is also fantastic. Get to these places early for breakfast during the weekends, usually a wait.

We took my IL's to Pittock but I don't think mansion is open in January; you do get pretty views of the city & Mt Hood from up there when it's clear out. Went up Lief Erickson trail w/ the IL's and dogs. Powell's if they like books. I would skip OMSI, there's omsi everywhere. Take them to a unique McMenamins theatre/pub, bridgeport brewery (I prefer the one in hawthorne vs the pearl), Laurelhurst park.

I'm sure there's more, I'm having a brain fart. Sorry.

I ditto all of this, especially Besaw's (get there EARLY!).  If Timberline is too far or too much of a pain, Sunday brunch (or any meal, really) at Skamania Lodge is also fantastic.

  • If you decided to go to the coast, stop by the Camp 18 Restaurant (milepost 18 on highway 26). If you go inside the restaurant and ask for the keys to the Logging Memorial (which is to the left of the building when you pull in headed to the coast).  Its a great way to learn about the industry that USE to thrive in Oregon back in the day. There is a lot of history there along with old logging equipment.

The George is also an amazing place to go.
