Weather and What To Do in SD?

Work is sending me to San Diego (Mission Valley, to be exact) February 1-6. I'll be busy during the day with work stuff, but my evenings will be free. What should I make it a point to do and see? And what kind of weather should I pack for? I'm coming from chilly MD, so the idea of warm weather in February is a novelty.

Re: Weather and What To Do in SD?

  • The weather has been a mix of cold days and warm & hot days. Today it's warm with clear skies. The best suggestion is to wait until a few days before to see what the weather looks like. You definitely don't need a heavy coat. But pants and some layers on top would be best.

Mission Valley is central. There is a large mall there called Fashion Valley. If you're looking to brouse high end shops, get something to eat or see a movie I would suggest it.

Old Town has Mexican food, shops and stuff to do. It's a nice evening walk around the historic buildings. Many will be closed at night, but the restaurants and retail stuff will be open.

Downtown is always a good bet. The Gaslamp District refers to the area on 4th-6th street with lots of restaurants, bars and boutique shops. There's also Horton Plaza mall with a movie theatre, etc.

Will you be alone or with co-workers?

  • Thanks!

    Notes to self:

    1. Do not go to fashion valley or you will return home very poor.

    2. Old Town is your friend. mmmmm Mexican!

I'll be with co-workers and hopefully spending time with a few friends who live out there, but I'm always up for solo adventures as well. Is Balboa Park worth a trip in the evening? Is it safe? What beach should I head to?

  • The musuems in Balboa Park close around 5pm. After that there is just one good restaurant (The Prado) that's open. People walk around for awhile at dusk and it's safe, but no one hangs out there at night because there isn't anything there open (besides the Old Globe Theatre for plays).

Beaches: Mission Beach or Pacific Beach are close (just head west on the 8 freeway). Mission Beach has a roller coaster & boardwalk with stores, etc. funky places to eat, etc. Pacific Beach is known for it's bars, weird people, funky clothing stores, etc. As a tourist either one would be fine.

For a beautiful, upscale beach neighborhood go north to La Jolla. The cover has the cliff views, restaurants, art galleries and stores. It's walking friendly and peaceful.

In Old Town the Old Town Mexican Cafe and Casa Guadalajara are my suggestions for good food. There are a lot of other options, but those are my favorites.

Fashion Valley also has an H&M, so it's possible to get out without too much damage. LOL.
