Anyone else with an ant problem?

My house is clean- no food left out etc., I just don't understand.  All of a sudden we have these new type of ants I have never seen- black kinda spidery legs and very fast- they have a shelf life of forever it seems because it's hard to kill them.  AGH!!!!!!!!  I need help and I have kids so if you can think of anything please let me know.

Re: Anyone else with an ant problem?

  • Do you live near a lake by any chance?

My parents house and neighborhood all had an ants problem.  They had the yard sprayed regularly by a professional which helped, but it was a never ending issue. Sometimes I think they live in the foundation of the house and come out wherever there are holes and in areas with water (kitchen, bathroom, etc.)

Try getting an exterminator and sealing all the nooks and crannies you can with caulk.  You can also put little traps in cabinets and by the doorways and under the sinks.

Sorry I can't be of more help, that's so incredibly frustrating!  I think it's just a problem for a lot of homes in South Florida...

  • We have the same problem.  I think that's just part of life in Florida.  Even if there is no food out they will look for water and come up the pipes.  I had the ant baits but they don't seem to do much good.  The best non-toxic solutions are wiping down surfaces with white vinegar and if you can figure out where they are coming from, put some powder down.  It sounds crazy but it works (after a few days I did not see them anymore).

  • yep, ours come out of the little cracks in our tub or bathroom.  the guy from terminix said that we should cut all plants on the perimeter of our house about 2 inches away from the wall and to caulk all little crannies and openings.
  • Getting an exterminator did wonders for this problem. It used to be so bad that if I left something sweet on my desk for 5 minutes while doing work, it would be covered in ants.  Now that we use Petri's I can sit and munch on anything and everything and not worry while I sit and work at my computer. LOL.

These people are AMAZING and it is one of the best investments we've ever made for our home. Our exterminator who services our area, comes every month and his name is Jerry. I love him. LOL.
