Help a Cincinnati Nestie?

Hello SC nesties!!

I live in Cinci and Im technically a knottie (FI and I are getting married in October of 09.) FI and I are looking to move to Charleston either right before or right after the wedding ;o) Im wondering if you have any suggestions on towns to live in ect. Ive been trying to look up houses on ReMax, but I have no idea what kinds of neighborhoods Im looking at! The main neighborhood that comes up is like Sumter or something.  The others I found were St Matthews, Bishopville, Elloree, Dalzell and Pinewood. I have never been to SC, but we're going in 2 weeks to Charleston and Myrtle Beach for a visit! If you can give me any info on those areas, along with any recco's for other locations would be MUCH appreciated! We dont have much of a price range (100k or less), so nothing pricey :o)

Thanks so much girls! Cant wait to be a SC Nestie and have some GTGs!!

Re: Help a Cincinnati Nestie?

  • Johns or James Island, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, these are all good communities/suburbs of Charleston.  I would defintely get with a real estate agent when you get serious and look up the school districts online, In SC the best neighborhoods are around the best schools, people pay good money to be around good schools even if they don't have kids! I have a ton of friends who live down there and absolutely love it. Good luck and welcome to Carolina!!!!
  • Hey.. congrats the the wedding and the move... Just wanted let you know... Sumter and all isn't necessarily close to Charleston...  Some towns in Charleston are Hanahan, Goose Creek or Summerville...  Check around in those areas...  GL!
  • If you want to live close to Charleston but want to stay below the 100k pricing, you might look at living 30 minutes out.  Pricing with be very expensive downtown.  Mt. Pleasant is expensive, though you can find some affordable housing depending on the area.  West Ashley/ James Island is great!  We used to rent there, now own a home in the North Charleston/ Hanahan area.  Our next move will probably be back towards this area just because of convenience to everything (for our work, lifestyle, grocery stores, etc).  North Charleston has its good parts and bad parts. Your realtor will know.  Hanahan is a very nice area with pretty good schools. Houses vary here as well.  Summerville is nice, but the commute is too much for us.  I would rather not get stuck in the Ashley Phosphate mess everyday.

Before you buy, rent an apartment for 6 months in Charleston (anywhere) and take time to scout out the area.  This way you'll find out how long it takes to get to work, what grocery stores/ shopping areas you like/ beach/ boating/ what part of the town fits your needs.  Everyone is different.
     GL!

  • We have a lot in common! My FI and I are also getting married Oct 09, and we just recently moved to SC as well. We also were looking at 100K and under for homes. We ended up in Goose Creek, which was my first choice because we wanted to be in a smaller town. Summerville is nice, but a little far, and also the traffic to and from can get bad in the mornings. Work with a realtor, and know what kind of community you want to live in, this area is really diverse. No matter where you end up, you are only within 30 mins of everything, so its not bad. I hope you have a great trip out here, and congrats on all the exciting stuff you have going one! Let me know if you have any more questions!
  • Thanks so much girls! Its really appreciated! I did find a house I like im Sumter, although you said its far away (like i said, Ive never been there! lol) Its an amazing house, old plantation style house. 8 bedrooms and alot of land. It would take us probably over a year to fix it up before we could live in it. But we were thinking maybe we will buy it and turn it into  B&B. But from what your telling me, Im not sure thats a good idea anymore! lol. I'll probably be hanging out on this board from now on, So i'll keep you posted!

    Yay!

  • Sumter, St. Matthews Bishopville, Elloree, Dalzell and Pinewood are all tiny little towns at least 100 miles from Charleston.  You have never known what small town south is until you drive through the one stop light..and oops you missed it.  Sumter is bigger but not necessarily better.  You would be able to find huge houses in those area for much less than 100k.

St Matthews is my hometown, I was there the other day and was really surprised at the number of houses available.  There are many really nice old house available for really cheap in the Dantzler street area, which is where you would want to be if you chose St Matthews.  And while I am a bit sentimental about St. Matthews, honestly, I dont know why anyone would want to move there.

My suggestion, rent an apartment in Charleston before you buy and get a good realtor.  Good luck.
