Anyone ever cruise with Carnival?

DH and I want to take a cruise next December.  We want to celebrate getting his master's degree/we're never going to school for anything ever again.  The most reasonably priced cruises for the length that we'd like to be away and where we'd like to go is by far Carnival.  But we've heard mixed reviews.

Has anyone ever cruised with them?  What do you think?

Re: Anyone ever cruise with Carnival?

  • My first cruise in 2005 was with carnival and I hated it.  BUT I think it truly depends on what you want.  If you like the fun, fun atmosphere and people, then you'd probably like that.  Hubby and I are more into the lectures and aren't real big drinkers, so we prefer Celebrity.
  • I've cruised with Carnival twice and they were both good experiences. The only thing I would suggest is that if you want to have fun and not be completely outnumbered by kids/teenagers, then try to schedule your cruise anytime other than June-August (and maybe April, because of Spring Break). Carnival is very kid friendly - which is awesome - but sometimes I felt like I was in a daycare, not on a relaxing vacation. I would say the value of what you get for the $$ is worth it.

Yes, back when I was around 21.  With that being said, Carnival was perfect for the group of us that went-young, drinkers, and had a blast!  As pp mentioned it tends to be a younger crowd....we actually went the first week in December & didn't run into too many teenagers.  There were a few young toddlers running around but not many to make that much of a difference.

I've also been on Royal Caribbean....not my cup of tea.  The crowd was much older & there wasn't a whole lot to do, IMPO.  This cruise was also taken in December.

  • Yes, and I loved it. I don't recall an over abundance of kids, and we went in June.
  • We've cruised Carnival twice, DH another time without me. I've never cruised any other cruiseline before so I can't really compare, but we both enjoyed it. The food was delicious and there was plenty to do on and off the ship. I also liked that there is a good mix of people, the first time around I expected mostly families with young children, but there is really every age group and activities for every age group. If we were to cruise again we would probably go with Royal Carribean only for something fresh and new, but I would definitely cruise with Carnival again.

ETA: We cruised in March during Spring Break and in June.

  • I've cruised with the I think 3 times now, 2 times with Royal Caribbean and 1 time with Celebrity.

Carnival is good, I think is a bit more personal than RC, but I do agree on the younger crowd...that for me is not a problem at all.

I think RC is my favorite though; I think the food is better and there rae tons to do (on the bigger ships that is)...also the entertainment is better IMO and the food is better too.

Celebrity is for a more laid back crowd...the service is outstanding, by far and the food is just great, especially on the specialty restaurant...but I found it a bit on the boring side (the cruise was 2 weeks and the second week all the entretaiment and things to do were all recycled).

Now, having said that...I think I'll cruise with Carnival again...I believe you have fun if you want to and you make your own entertaiment...in my case I don't need the ship to provide my fun Wink ..I guess it's like anything, if you wanna enjoy it you will.

  • DH & I cruised with them in Oct 2005.

It wasn't the best experience, but that was b/c our trip was the same week as hurricane Wilma. It was only a 5 day cruise & it got cut to a 4 day, so we had to spend extra $$ to stay in tampa another night. Then we didn't go to either ports that were scheduled and they took us to progresso, Mexico instead. It was not pretty. Our group made the best of it though.

I know a lot of it wasn't Carnival's fault, BUT....

my cousin booked the SAME cruise with them a year or so later and again 1 of the ports got cut! (my cousin was in our group the first time around). I guess Carnival gave him a credit for another cruise, that they just used this past November and for the 3rd time around 1 of their ports got cut. and this was a whole different trip agenda!

It just seems to me that they'll cancel a port on a whim (if it's windy, if they aren't on time, if you fart the wrong way....), which really sucks especially if you are really looking forward to that port!

Just my 2 cents! Big Smile

  • Thanks everyone for the input! Y'all are awesome!
  • We've cruised with Carnival twice (and I'm planning a third atm).  I have had nothing but good experiences.  I've never gone in the summer, so I don't know how that would be, but we've never had a problem with kids.  Actually, the last cruise was in December and we almost never saw kids.  The activities for younger kids are great so they keep them pretty busy.

We like that it's more of a party crowd.  If that's not your style, it might not be for you.  For us, we like that no matter what time of day/night you go out, there is something fun going on.  There is definitely a younger crowd and a very fun, energetic vibe.
