Please rec a good moderately priced restaurant (central or northish)

Looking for a restaurant for taking some friends out for birthday dinner... something with an average price per plate under $20ish.  Central/North is best, but I suppose we'd consider downtown too.

Our usuals are NXNW, ZTejas, Kona, Iron Cactus, etc. so we're looking for something new and interesting!

I've heard some good things about Vivo; has anyone tried it?

Re: Please rec a good moderately priced restaurant (central or northish)

  • I've heard good things about Vivo too.  A friend went on a date with her DH and said it was a great atmosphere and she enjoyed it.

So again, I've 'heard' good things, but can't vouch.

  • I can vouch for Vivo. It's been at least a year, but I liked it. It used to be packed whenever we went and I remember at least once we had to wait a long time because we didn't have a reservation. I think you *can* make reservations, though.

Eastside Cafe is also good and most of their dishes are under $20. NORTH in the Domain might be under $20. My DH recently went to Buenos Aires Cafe (on E 6th and said it was really good).

  • Vivo, Chez Zee, Cover 3, Santa Rita, Threadgills...
  • Vivo's is great.  They're kind of a "healthy" take on Mexican.  As in, they have brown rice instead of mexican and they put alfalfa sprouts on their nachos.  Oh, and you HAVE to get their Prickly Pear Margarita.  MMMMmmm, I think that just might be my first drink after I have Sofia.

    Moonshine is good too.

  • I haven't been to the Vivo up north, just the one down south, but I looooved that one! I haven't been in a long time because it gets so crowded, but the place was amazing.

The art work on the walls, I loved so much that I stalked down the artist. As in, called him on the phone and went to his studio. Someday, I will be able to afford something of his!

The decor is beautiful, all the women get free roses, there is ice and rose petals in the sinks ... etc.

Prickly Pear Margarita, YUM! Puff tacos, YUM! Now ... I'm thinking I'm going to have to try the north Vivo, too!

  • I LOVE Vivo's but if you go to the original one on a weekend night, it gets really loud and it's hard to hear DH across the table.  So something to keep in mind.
  • I've never been to Vivo's but have dinner plans there tonight!  I'll make sure to report back

  • I haven't been, but I've heard good things about Mama Roux's.  Evidently it's good cajun food.

  • Don't forgot Roaring Fork up north off Braker...awesome atmosphere and if you sit in the bar during happy hour it's soooo cheap, but the food is amazing.
