How to help Haiti locally?
I'm not a regular on this board but this is a local question so I was hoping you fine ladies would be able to help.
My heart breaks for Haiti, I have done what I can to help financially but I really want to do something hands on to help as well. I'm hoping someone can lead me in a direction of local events or groups that are doing something to help Haiti. I'm also going to google for such information but I know the local ladies of Portland are always doing wonderful things so I thought asking here would be a good outlet as well.
Thanks!
Re: How to help Haiti locally?
Honestly right now giving money is the best route. I work for Providence who has a close tie with Haiti and sends supplies and missionaries there every February. 2 weeks ago, a 40 foot container was sent full of medical supplies and other needs and it is still enroute. What a great use it will now be! But as of now, Providence states that material donations are not encouraged at this time. I checked out Handonportland.org and they are also encouraging financial assistance through mercy corps at this time.
I'd suggest volunteering your time with a local organization or an event though Hands On Porltand. I know it's not directly helping Haiti, but it's helping others who desperately need help too.
I second HandsOnPortland.org - No matter what project you pick, it will help someone, somewhere. And that will in effect help everyone, everywhere. Cheesy, but it's true!
