dishwasher detergent

What's your favorite 'green' dishwasher detergent or DIY recipe for it, especially for hard water? The cheaper the better, but not so cheap that it ends up being more expensive by running the dishwasher twice. I use plain vinegar as a rinse aid.

I was really hopeful about the 50/50 borax and washing soda recipe but it was a total flop. For a couple of weeks I tried different amounts, making lighter loads, adding some salt, baking soda, etc. to no avail. Anything plastic came out especially disgusting like with a coating of dirty grease on it :/ Is there some magic ingredient I'm missing?

Biokleen powder is on my list to try next. I've also tried Seventh Generation Gel (meh) and Ecover (decent).
