Hi Ladies -
I posted here a while ago with a few relocating questions (when we were possibly moving) - but now it's official! We're moving to MA the first week in March. Since I grew up in Arlington, and still have family/friends in the area in pretty excited. Although I am sad to leave NY...
Anyways, we'll be looking for a house in the area (we haven't decided on an exact town, yet), and any advice on commuting times would be SO helpful. My husband will be working in Waltham. Does anyone know the approximate commute times from these areas:
Westford, Medfield, Sudbury, Acton, Canton, Stow and Burlington. I know none of these areas are right near Waltham (except maybe Burlington - I'm more just wondering about traffic on 95). But I'd like to be a little ways out from the area I grew up in. I don't want to live in the Arlington, Belmont, Lexington, Newton, area...too close to my parents!
Also - does anyone know anything about Reading? Someone told me it was a nice area, and I know nothing about it.
TIA for any help - and looking forward to "meeting" you once I move.
Re: Moving in March and need commute info
Welcome back to Mass!
I don't know too too much about any of those towns. Sudbury is right near me and its a really nice town. And my sister in law and her husband just moved to a condo in Reading. The commute for them is good (her in Boston - taking the commuter rail, and him in Andover). Anything on 1-95 will be rough with the commute. Maybe coming south to Waltham won't be so bad since most of the rough traffic is on I-93.
GL!!
Of the towns you listed, I think Sudbury and Burlington would be closest to Waltham. You don't have to take 95 from Sudbury to get to Waltham so this might be your best bet commute-wise. It's a really nice town. However, taxes are high and you do have to pay extra for trash pickup or bring your trash to the dump (just points to consider). Burlington is pretty close so at least DH would not have to be on 95 too long. You can also take back roads through Lexington from Burlington so if you want to consider Burlington, something on the Burlington/Lexington line would be convenient. Canton is maybe 20-25 minutes without traffic, same with Acton. He would have to take 95 from Canton or Rte 2 from Acton...both of these can be bad if he has to commute during "normal" commuting hours. Reading would be a b*tch of a commute (both 93 and 95). My first choice on your list commute-wise and town-wise would be Sudbury. Despite the higher taxes and extra $ for some services, it is a really nice town. It has a good school system, it's really pretty and would be pretty convenient for a Waltham commute. You might also want to consider Wayland as well. It's near Sudbury.
Traffic on 95S is pretty bad from about Woburn down to 90. It totally depends on the day-- some days it isn't bad, but I think most days is pretty slow moving. There are back roads in from Burlington to Waltham as well and that might be the best option.
I think Reading is a hot place to live now... I think the commute from Sudbury in on Rt 20 tends to get backed up a lot too. I don't know about the South Shore towns as much.
Westford/Acton - The commute would be between 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and where you're located in each town (Westford would be further away than Acton). Both great towns with great school systems. Acton is pretty expensive though; Westford is more affordable.
Sudbury/Stow - I'd say no more than 30-40 minutes probably. Pricey towns. (Sudbury would be closer than Stow.)
Burlington - While this town is closest, traffic on 95 is a nightmare. However, since Burlington is close you could probably find back roads into Waltham. There is a lot in Burlington: mall, restaurants, etc. The school system is pretty good (probably not as good as the others but definitely not bad). And it is affordable. (I grew up in the next town over.)
Reading - I'm not sure how long the commute would be since you would need to travel 95. It would probably be the longest with the amount of traffic at rush hour. It's a nice town though I don't know much about it.
I don't know anything about Medfield or Canton.

Hi - welcome back to MA!
Ken and I lived in Waltham and Arlington, then in Medfield, and now we live in Reading...so I might have some thoughts.
Taking 95S during rush hour is a nightmare. Ken works in Framingham and leaves by 7am and it still takes him an hour (but 30 min to get to Waltham so that would be ok for you). We LOVE living in Reading - it is a really nice town, good schools (no kids for us yet, but it's a good thing to have) and a good nice sense of community.
When we lived in Medfield I commuted to Medford daily (we lived with my ILs while we were buying our house). It took me about 45 min on a good day with no traffic (I left at 6 and went to the gym before work). I am thinking from Medfield you'd be a good 45-50 min to Waltham IN traffic, but it always depends - 95 north is hit or miss and it only ever takes one yahoo to f-things up for the rest of the commute.
Any reason you're not looking at Waltham? I lived there for years, and it's not perfect but it's not terrible - taxes are affordable, the schools are OK, and the location is pretty good.
