The High Price of Sugar (doc)

Has anyone seen this? I fell asleep (it was late and I was in bed, not because it was boring, which led to crazy dreams of me starting my own nice sugar plantation lol) so I will finish it tonight, but wow.

I've already been avoiding sugar for a long time because I'd heard a little about the industry, and because supposedly processing is a pretty unenvironmentally friendly aspect that pollutes a lot. (a good overview http://environment.about.com/od/pollution/a/sugar.htm )

But I picked this up at the library...wow. The way these people live is horrific. Its about the sugarcane workers in the DR, most of whom are pretty much slaves from Haiti. They are kept under guard, behind layers of barbed wire, and not paid. They are paid in 'vouchers' for the overpriced company store. They are barefoot (can't afford shoes) in the fields. They don't have food, or access to clean water. Most just eat sugar cane and thus are malnourished.

It was really sad, and the US is the main purchaser of this sugar cane.

I feel like my list of foods I can't eat in good conscience just keeps growing and sugar now has a firm spot on the list. Thank bees for honey!

  • Adding to my Netflix, thank you! Also, thanks for the suggestions below in my raw food post, I added those to the list as well: )
