My SE garden thinks it is spring!

I'm getting all sorts of green shoots popping out of the ground. I need to go wander the yard and see which ones they are. I was not expecting it so early. I hope we don't have a freeze in February.

Re: My SE garden thinks it is spring!

  • I went out to see which plants were reaching out from the dirt. Here's what they are: lilies, hyacinth, iris, sedums. Seems a bit early... ski season just started. I hope they make it until spring.

What's going on in your garden?

  • What's your zone? I'm in 7b and my daffodils and irises are putting out green shoots. Here, my daffodils begin to bloom in mid-late Feb. I don't plant hyacinths (WAYYYYY too fragrant for my allergies), but they along with daffs, tulips, and crocus are usually the first of the early spring bloomers. I don't get lily sprouts until late Feb-March.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. They'll be fine. They can tolerate the freeze and will slow growth until the weather warms up again. I got pretty excited walking around my garden yesterday and seeing the green sprouts! Oh and one of my new garden additions - Candytuft, has little white blooms. Yay!

  • I'm 7B, too! Funny that we are across the country, but the plants think it is the same.

I know! LOL When I saw your post, my first thought was, I think Seattle has a climate pretty close to Memphis. With the exception of hot and humid summers. LOL I lived in Portland, Or for a year many moons ago, but I always remembered that the climate was very much like Memphis.

What kind of lilies did you plant? Usually my Asiatics are the first to start poking through the mulch. I'm afraid to plant Orientals unless I can find a variety that won't make me sneeze. So, the lovely Stargazers are out for me. Boooo!

  • The lilies that are coming up are all daylilies. I don't know the specific names. They are yellow (stella?) and orange. The are great for borders and spread on their own (divide every 2 years). What do you use as fertilizer for them? I just used Dr Earth. They did have as many blooms. If you have had luck with something, let me know.

I have orientals in there somewhere. They have struggled and been moved so many times. I don't mean that they struggled because they were weak plants. They were strong and grew tall one year. We didn't realize how tall they would be, so they were bumped with car doors, hoses and neighborhood kids. We moved them to the back yard. Something started eating them. The stalk would just be cut off, like a tree munched by a beaver. We moved them around again. Squirrels dug up the bulbs. At this point, if a few pop up, they will be a pleasant surprise.

  • My daylilies are doing NOTHING right now. But then again, we had a a couple of weeks of super cold temps. I mean - 9 degrees in MEMPHIS? Dude - we never see temps like that during the winter. Normally we have upper 40s for highs in winter. Hopefully they'll perk up soon. We're scheduled for a return to normal temps.

That sucks about your lilies. I wonder if lily beetles or a stem borer is eating them. I didn't think deer would bother lilies? I have deer around my neighborhood and I've never seen them grazing on my plants. I try to plant things they don't like! LOL
