Experience with heather?

Not that I'm complaining, but my heather started blooming again in late November and is still in full bloom, despite the calendar and the temps here in northeast PA. I was curious as to whether I have a special plant or if anyone else has seen this.

Re: Experience with heather?

  • It is known to be a very late bloomer, but it's notoriously difficult to establish. I'm only aware of a handful of people who have done so. When I worked in the nursery, it looked good when it arrived to us, but never lasted more than a single season before it looked half-dead or dying. Did you plant it or was it preexisting in your landscape?

  • I just noticed this morning that mine was blooming too.  Mine has been where it is for almost 5 years and does not look dead.  Funny thing is that it never blooms that well in spring!

I planted it. We had a blank canvas when we moved in, and did a major landscaping project in the front yard area. I've been doing a mix of putting in plants suggested in our landscaping plan, and adding/substituting random plants that I like. I have a thing for Scotland, so I have a Scotch broom and a single heather plant. I had planted 2 heathers, and one turned brown except for a single stem until it finally died altogether. This particular one seems to love where it is, so I'm letting it do its thing.

  • Good for you- I never use them anymore because of their failure rate. Anyone who can grow it deserves an award, if you ask me. The Broom can be invasive (if you didn't know that) so watch out for babies.

I've heard that, but so far it's just gotten big. I was OCD about picking off seed pods the first year, but it's in an area where I'm more than happy for it to take over, so we'll see. So far it's behaving ;)

I wish I could take credit for the heather, but I just leave it be. It's so pretty in bloom and covered in snow.

  • I do know there are some heathers that bloom in the winter. I bought one called something like an Erica December red heather that blooms in the winter. Of course it died way before winter started which was just lovely so I didn't get to see it bloom once.
