Hi all,
My husband has been just extended a job offer in Greensboro (we live in Boston). I've been trying to read all I can about the area but still have so many questions!
Can anyone recommend nice family friendly areas in the Greensboro area? Apparently a lot of the people at the company live near Lake Jeanette, Jamestown, and in Greensboro (though I'm not sure what areas). Are there any of these you would recommend over others? The company is near Latham Park.
Are there any
good areas that are pedestrian friendly? We just have one car and it
would be nice to be able to walk to parks, the library, etc. while DH
is at work.
Can you recommend good places to find housing rental listings? I've looked a bit at craigslist, but are there other places that are better? (Maybe a local newspaper or something)?
Are there any school districts that are particularly well rated?
Are there any areas that have a very active Catholic church community?
Are there gyms/youth centers you would recommend joining (YMCA, etc)
Are there any local parent groups or organizations or newspapers, websites, etc. where parents can connect (besides here of course!)
TIA! I'm sure I'll have more questions
Re: Looking for Greensboro information (relocating)
Below is a link to a thread full of information on the GSO. Welcome:) There are several GSO nesties here!
http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/29083130.aspxHello and Welcome! I live near the Lake Jeannette area, though I actually prefer my neighborhood more--its much more pedestrian friendly because its closer to the parks and some stores but isn't so close that there's a parking lot in our backyard--plus its a little older so its more mature. The nice thing about Greensboro is there is just about every kind of housing arrangement you could want. Old historic homes, older homes with character, brand new spanking mcmansions, mansions, brownstones, condos, etc. We actually have a surplus of housing right now, so literally whatever you want, we have.
As far as the family-friendliness of it--the benefit of living in a "college town"--and there are 5 colleges in Greensboro, UNCG and NC A&T being the two biggest, is that there are lots of younger professionals with families in the area. Plenty of YMCAs to join, along with swim and tennis clubs (there is a swim and tennis club in Lake Jeannette, but there are also clubs all around town).
If you can come down for a visit, your best bet might be to drive around with a realtor--even if you are just looking at rentals. He/she should be able to help narrown down your search area and/or show you areas of town that fit your wants/needs that haven't been suggested. Good luck and feel free to ask any more questions that you may have here!
