1st birthday menu help - light dinner options?

We are having our son's first b-day party on the 31st.  It is on a Sunday around 4pm.  It is on the heels of a huge basketball tournament at our church so everyone will be eating and drinking all weekend.  i was thinking maybe a couple pots of soup as a filling but lighter meal after a huge weekend.  however ,I am kinda thinking against that b/c there's probably gonna be close to 100 people and I have visions of kids spilling soup on the carpet and bowls cracking etc.  Anyone have any ideas for a huge party but maybe meals that do not include utensils (like kabobs -which we do for every party, kinda boring).   Most people will be on couches eating in their laps.

  • I would not serve the kids soup. You can do pb&j cut outs for them or something along those lines.
What about Panini's for the adults and fruit kabobs?

I was thinking Paninis too!  You could set up a station with a couple of Panini "irons."

  • I love doing a more gourmet twist on sandwiches and quiche.  I have used this menu before:

Sandwiches - I put them on foccacia breads from Panera Bread

Smoked turkey, roasted red peppers, red onion, havarti cheese and lettuce with a smear of pesto

Genoa salami, provalone cheese, tomato, basil with a little mayo

Prosciuto, shaved parmesan, arugala and pesto

Quiche - roasted red pepper, spinach and feta

    Side dishes:

Giada's Orzo Pasta Salad (garbanzo beans, tomatoes, onion, etc....tossed in a honey, lemon vinagrette - SOO good)

    Pesto Pasta Salad

    Fresh fruit salad

    Assorted cheeses/brie/crackers

Though it is sandwiches, I make it seem more gourmet.  You can get creative on the sandwiches.  I cut them in small triangles and secure them with a pretty decorative tooth pick so people can take more than one (since they are small).  For kids  I get small dinner roles and secure them with kid like decorative toothpicks.  I do turkey and cheese, PB and J, or ham and cheese.  This last time the kids really loved the tiny little sandwiches - there were hardly any leftover.

For dessert - cookies, brownies, chocolate covered pretzels or other small finger items work well.

  • For 100 I'd keep it simple- get some sandwich fixings or big subs and call it a day.  I can't imagine trying to do paninis for that many.

We did soup and sloppy joes for my kid's first.  One thing that helped- we served the soup in coffee mugs so people could handle them easier.
