Seed storage ?

First- I walked into Lowe's yesterday and saw their seeds and seed starter flats out. OMG, I wanted to spend a lot of money right then and there! Then I remembered we live in Montana, where I won't be able to transplant anything outdoors until mid-May.

Second- I had a bunch of seeds left over from container gardening last year; I was planning to use seeds from the same packets to start plants this year. After seeing the Lowe's display, I went home to evaluate the stock of which seeds I already have.

I got home and realized that in our haste to move last fall (we built a house in 10 weeks, moving twice in the process), the leftover seed packets got stuck on a shelf in the garage. Our unheated garage. We've had -30 temperatures this winter...

Can I re-use these seed packets? Or does cold that cold kill any potential of the seed?

From here on out I promise to store seeds in a dark, 50 degree place!

"Oh for sh!ts sake."- my 84 year old grandma. Pregnancy Ticker

Re: Seed storage ?

  • I'd give it a shot if I was you.  -30 is really cold but you never know.

(I store my seeds in an air-tight container in the back of our fridge with much success)
