Anyone demo an in-ground pool?

We bought a house with an in ground pool which is broken.  We plan on knocking in the pool this spring/summer and filling with dirt and landscaping it.  Has anyone done this and has advice, or estimates on how much it cost? Thanks, Julia

Re: Anyone demo an in-ground pool?

  • We did it.  Our new septic needed to go where the old in-ground pool was.  I don't want to scare you but it was a battle and a half to get our in-ground pool out.  It was made of Gunnite (spelling?) so a regular bulldozer didn't cut it.  Our contractor brought in a much larger bulldozer and that didn't cut it either.  We ultimately need to rent this enormous jackhammer-like contraption on a crane to break the pool apart.  It barely fit in our yard and the whole damn house shook everytime they'd turn that badboy on.  But in less than a day it was done - cut through those pool walls like it was cutting butter.

I think it cost us about $3-4K by the time it was all said and done.  Mind you, that does NOT include the cost of fill and landscaping (sod).  The latter would be impossible for me to estimate since our entire backyard wound up needing fill/sod by the end of the septic install.

  • My work probably did it the wrong way.  We just filled the pool up with dirt.  You can still see the edge of it sticking out of the ground!  I'm not sure if that's even legal anymore (we buried the pool 15 years ago) but it may be something to consider.
