Have to have Surgery....

Some of you may have read my complaints here and there about not being able to make the York GTG since I had therapy appts and dr appts about my ankle...   Ive had 3 sprains in the past 8 years, and my foot has recently gotten worse and not feeling any better within the past 3-4 months. I finally saw a specialist out at OSS yesterday, and it looks like I'll be having surgery on my ankle.

They are doing a procedure called a Brostrum Ankle Ligament Reconstruction.  My ligaments in my ankle are too loose, causing all the issues.  They will repair the ligaments, and will fuse & tighten as needed.. they'll also remove and shorten any of the ligaments if necessary.   I'll be off work 1-4 weeks. The first week at home, foot propped up in a hard splint and no weight on my foot at all... I go to my first post op appt a week following to be put into a hard weight bearing cast for 2-3 weeks. They then remove it at my 2nd visit, remove the stitches and put me in an aircast.. I'll start physical therapy (again)... after 3 weeks or so of that, then I go back to see if Im ok to come out of my air cast and continue therapy.. then about 12 weeks after surgery, then I go back to see if I can be released around the end of May and resume normal activities/slight or no restrictions.  On top of being off work 1-4 weeks, I will also not be driving for 3 months!!! which sucks. But I will get through it. I should be doing fine by end of May, or around my birthday - June 1.. so I can enjoy summer. I was hoping to have all this done before it got nice out.. but looks like things will wrap up just in time.

Just wanted to fill everyone in.  I'll keep you all posted once the time comes and let you know how things go.

Re: Have to have Surgery....

  • Oh wow! I hope that everything goes OK. My dad should have that surgery done but he won't go to the dr because the dr told him he would need the surgery if he sprained his ankle again. He is stubborn. I hope that you feel better and that the surgery goes well!

  • Thanks much.... yeah I had a feeling going in there yesterday that that would be the answer to the problem since Ive already been through PT and its been an ongoing problem now for how long and not getting better.  Im nervous, but I have a lot of faith and trust in who Im dealing with and knowing that things are going to turn out just fine.  I already have things in mind with my time off from work, so it may be a nice break after all..    I'll keep you posted once the time comes.  :)

  • Oh, wow. Good luck. It sounds like you have a pretty positive attitude towards the surgery and recovery period, which is probably the most important element!

  • Oh wow, sorry you have to go through all that. But you're right, look at the bright side, at least it'll all be over before Summer arrives!  With all that time off, you can help keep this board alive =)

  • Well, hopefully this will give you a solution...I know how frustrating that kind of thing can be I had some similar knee-related issues in high school.  Def keeping you in my thoughts and prayers that this will be the fix you need!

  • Thanks for all the kind words and thoughts!  Im not excited or anything, but Im looking forward to it being here and getting it over with and moving on and hopefully being pain free and back to normal with this once its over with.  Only 37 more days... haha.

Its kind of strange, I sprained my ankle the first time about 1-2 months when DH and I started dating, and I had my wisdom teeth out later that year too.. now we've only been married 7 months... and here I am having surgery on him already.  LOL.  Oh well, I know he'll be a big help when I need him like he was before... In a way, it will be nice to have some time off work and take a break even though its not really the preferred way.

Thanks again everyone!  I dont know how much I'll get on here once Im home, got some things lined up already to do (make cards, watch movies, play Wii, do some filing, work on my insurance license course)... but I will definitely post up after surgery at some point and let you guys know how things go.

Thanks again everyone, it means a lot.  Hopefully I'll be able to make a get together after all this mess is over with!

  • I'm sorry you have been in such discomfort and hope the surgery helps.  I'm a total chicken, so I admire your attitude.  Sending positive thoughts to you!
  • I hope the surgery goes well.  I'm sure it will be worth it to be pain-free.  Aww, I'm glad your DH is so supportive :)
