1st trip to Austin was AU-SOME!

As I've stated before, we are planning to relocate to Austin and our first visit there was awesome--despite the rain on the 1st two days.  We were able to check out some nice neighborhoods and builders but haven't made a final decision just yet.  For those who have built or are building homes, please tell me who your builder was/is and what your experience with the sales people was like and what you enjoy most about your home.  Please feel free to share as much as you'd like!  I'm interested in hearing it all!  This will be a big help to us as we make our move to Texas.  Thanks!

Re: 1st trip to Austin was AU-SOME!

  • I haven't built a home, I just wanted to say that I'm glad you liked it!
  • I'm so glad it worked out for you!

I don't know what area you are looking in, but we just built w/ Grand Haven Homes in SW Austin.  There are definitely pros and cons- I can give you more info if you're interested.  Also, our last house was a Pulte.  We were very happy with their product and would build with them again any day.  Wilshire was building in the last subdivision as well and I heard good things about their houses.

In the process of finding our current house, we probably sat down with 20 builders.  I would not recommend David Weekley or Meritage for my preferences and KB can be hit or miss, depending on the location.  Lennar, Stan Pac and Capital Pacific are more entry-level homes.  (Now defunct) Newmark, Taylor Morrison and Green Builders Inc were on our short list.

  • I am pretty happy with our Standard Pacific Home. They do good quality, but there were some annoying details that took forever to get right or never got fixed to my satisfaction at the end. I think it depends on the neighborhood and who your construction manager is.

People with Ryland homes in our neighborhood (Buda, south of Austin) have been complaining of major structural problems in homes less than 2 years old. They are seeing cracks in their foundation and walls. I think I even read something about chunks of ceiling falling off! Even in other neighborhoods, everyone we know with a Ryland has had a major problem.

Wishing you the best with your decisions.

  • there is alot and hit and miss with every builder. Mainly because they hire out sub-contractors for everything.. so there is no consistency or standard for them. So with that, its best to hire an agent to help you out regardless of which builder and a home inspector that has done New Home inspections.

Ive seen it many many times that couple years into owning they find out there are issues that should have been taken care of by the builder or were just done incorrectly.

Im a Realtor so if you have any questions feel free to email me findyourwayhomeinaustin at gmail dot com.
