Okay, DCers.

Tell me some stuff that I MUST do while I'm in your fine city. I'll have loads of free time, so do your worst.

Re: Okay, DCers.

  • Eat at Ben's Chili Bowl

  • What if I don't like chili?
  • have the half smokes.
    image
  • take the train to NYC.  LOL
  • You know I'm planning on that, Busy.
  • You'd better be, Stinky.

Go to Adams-Morgan and find the amazing Ethiopian restaurant (I'll find you the name) and eat there. you won't regret it.

  • -- shop at eastern market or dupont farmers market
-- walk through georgetown or alexandria
-- take the boat from old town alexandria to national harbour
-- GO TO SILVER SPRING IT'S BALLIN'

  • The Newseum.

I also think the Spy Museum and the Crime and Punishment museums's seem really cool, but I haven't been to either yet to say if they live up to the hype or not.

  • Andplusalso:

-All the regular Memorials and Smithsonians. But also, the Mall has The National Botanical Gardens, The Freer Gallery, the sculpture gardens at the National Gallery and Hirshchorn, and the Haupt Garden behind the Smithsonian Castle.

-Spend a lot of time in Penn Quarter (Gallery Place/Chinatown metro). The Building Museum and Portrait Galleries are there. The Spy Museum is also there. Many people love it, but I think it's expensive and overrated.

-Check the Washington Walks website to see if they have any special tours before spring. Usually the special event ones are the best, so go whereever they want to take you.

-You leave the end of March? You *might* *just* catch the cherry blossoms.

ETA: whyTF is my link going to theknot? Dumb. www.washingtonwalks.com

Or the cheese fries. Just bring cash. Ben doesn't take credit.

  • i also think the spy museum is overrated.

    be sure to eat at
    -- zaytinya
    -- georgia brown's
    -- 2 amys

  • I plan on hitting all the museums I can, and I hope hope hope I can catch some of the cherry blossoms (although I realize I might not). I'm taking down all these restaurants. I'm hoping to expand H's culinary horizons.

Also Granville Moore's, Zola, and Pizzeria Paradiso.

  • Photography-wise, you're going to want to spend plenty of time in Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and Chinatown.

More museums: Tudor Place, Dumbarton Oaks, the Renwick Gallery, Stephen Decatur House, The Phillips Collection, The African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, and the Woodrow Wilson house

Oh, and try to see a concert at the 9:30 Club.

Sorry, can you tell I'm homesick?

  • No, this is great, Duckis.
  • I second 9:30 Club - it's my favorite venue probably of all time.

  • will you have a car?  a trip to the inner harbour in baltimore is nice, as is the nightlife @ the power station.

    image
  • I will have a car, and I have an aunt & uncle who live in Baltimore who've already promised to show us around.

I told H that my goal was to see as much of the east coast as I can while we're there.

  • Go to the National Zoo and see the pandas. Check out the Baltimore Aquarium and Inner Harbor area. Stop in Philly on your way up to NYC - get a cheesesteak at Pat's, check out the historical district (Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, etc.), and have lunch with me - I work right across the street from the Liberty Bell.
  • did no one mention the national zoo or the national cathedral?  those are nice, especially at night.  a nice restaurant, ardeo, is just outside the zoo, and there's this great italian grocery store with homemade frozen raviolis and lasagnas on the way to ardeo.

  • If you're going to be driving, I think it's worth a trip to go to Annapolis and walk around for a bit. And go to Chick and Ruth's Delly. YUM.
    image
  • The Baltimore Aquarium isn't great, but it's not bad to see while you are there. I am jaded, I compare evreything to the the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Which you have to see once you move out here.
    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • annapolis is a great day trip, ESPECIALLY when the recruits are around.  yum.  best day ever?  herndon monument climb.  google that.
    image
  • If you go to the Police Officers Memorial look up my dad for me.
  • How could I forget the Zoo? That should be at the top of the list. There's a great strip of restaurants just off the Adams Morgan Metro exit. Lots of sushi and mediteranian places.

Mama Aisha's is another great restaurant in that area, though it's  more of a personal favorite than a DC hot spot. It's a little Mediterranean place where my ILs used to go for date night. We have Christmas Eve dinner there every year.

I second the Annapolis suggestion. Great Falls is also fun as long as we're talking about outside DC stuff.

  • *makes note:* Montery Bay Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta is fantastic - they have the world's largest tank - but hold off until later this year because they're doing construction and don't have everything on display. The whale sharks are really cool.

  • I think the Aquarium is cool because of the rain forest part (yay sloths), but other than that I don't get too excited about it.  I prefer the Science Center, but I have no clue what the current exhibits are.   Definitely walk arount the Inner Harbor, get a beer at Wharf Rat or Max's on Broadway, and search out Paper Moon Diner.

  • Altantic City - NJ at it's best.

This looks like a must-see if you ask me. *Mmm...*

  • http://www.dangerouspies.com/  and other goodies in federal hill, baltimore!  the 8x10 club!  cross street market!
