Visitor from WCF board. :)

Hello ladies! My H and I are thinking about moving to the west coast in the next few years. I just wanted to see what areas to avoid, what school districts are good etc. Any information would be fantastic. :) TIA!

Re: Visitor from WCF board. :)

  • big difference from Florida to Oregon =)  it just really all depends on were you will be working. What would you be doing for work?
  • Yeah... we're looking for a huge change. :) I'd love to move somewhere near the midwest, but the hubs needs to be near the ocean... Oregon is the compromise. :)

We'll probably move where he can get a job, since he is the primary breadwinner. There is a position open now for an environmental specialist in La Grande that he's going to apply for just to see what happens, but we're not really planning on moving for a few years.

  • La Grande is way out in Eastern Oregon and in the middle of nowhere, and several hours from the ocean.  I'd live in the midwest before I lived there.  You really want to be close to I-5 or west of it if you want access to the ocean easily.

  • Have you guys ever visited here before? I went to Florida for my honeymoon back in August and had a blast. We went to Destin, my great aunt has a condo there on Gulf Shore Drive. It rained one day while we were there and it reminded me of Oregon rain, big fat rain drops...but 90 degrees out.

I love Oregon, born and raised. But the rain does get old. But then again it wouldn't be Oregon with out the rain.

If you are looking for something closer to the coast you could always buy my parents house that's for sale its a 5 bedroom 2 bath =D (sorry nestie Gods if that is wrong to show someone a house for sale...)  just saying :)

Where at in Florida do you live? Guess I could look at your profile and see if I can find it that way.

LOL--I've lived in La Grande AND the midwest--I'd pick La Grande any day It's about 4 hours from Portland, 2.5 hours from Boise (and much, much closer to the ocean than the midwest, lol).  It is a pretty small town--pop. about 12,000.  Pros: positively gorgeous and lots of outdoor activities nearby--skiing, camping, hiking, etc. Low cost of living and less rain than the west side of the state. There is a university there, which keeps it from being relentlessly redneck-territory.  Cons: size, distance from good shopping and cultural activities outside of the university.

If you choose Oregon--any part of Oregon--get your job lined up first.  Unemployment here is very, very high.

  • Thank you ladies!

I don't know that he would accept the position if he got it - but it's going to be fun to see if he does. I really, really want out of Florida. I recently had a baby and I do NOT want her growing up here.I live in Clearwater, which is right outside of Tampa. IMO, it's a great place to live if you don't have kids... and a great place to visit if you do have kids.

What parts do you ladies live in (I didn't want to assume you were all from Portland)? The main concern for me is finding a good school district and a place that isn't as crime-riddled as Clearwater/Tampa.

I think the majority of posters on this board are in Portland.  I'd say the quality of schools varies wildly depending on the city you're looking at; Portland Public Schools, for example, is in pretty sad shape right now, but I think the suburban school districts are better.  I don't know much about schools in other areas.

Crime rates anywhere in the state are probably lower than Tampa and in Portland they vary depending on which part of the city you're in.  All in all, though, I feel pretty safe in Portland, and we live in a crappy part of town.
