Okay, so admitidly I had no clue about sugar's not so sweet practices around the world. Honestly, I still don't know anything about it, just what I've heard from here. However, I was wondering how everyone felt about Wholesome products. I switched to this sugar almost 6 months ago when my regular sugar ran out. I saw that it was organic, and out of all the other types on the shelf, this one stood out. I only use sugar for baking, so I just ran out of it last night. I was really quite pleaed with it, and planned on purchasing again.
Then entered the discussion on here on the perils of sugar producers this past week. Now I'm mixed up as to whether I should even have the stuff in my house! So, I went to the website, and found information on their fair trade practices. Tell me what you guys think, do you think they're ok? They are a subsidiary of two large sugar coporations, but I feel like when it comes to certain products (not all or even most), if I don't vote with my dollar, the companies wont get the message to change. Also, I'm from Houston, so Sugarland is local and Imperial has been in my life..my whole life. Am I just hoping the company in my back yard does well by the environment?
Anywho, tell me what you guys think!
Re: Sugar Trade
I don't eat sugar (well as best I can) for two reasons: human rights violations, and environmental pollution.
This is fair trade certified, which is a pretty meaningful certification IMO. I really like how detailed they are about the different places they buy sugar.
I'm not sure that sugar can be processed with little environmental impact, but at least this isn't supporting the enslavement of Haitians in the DR! And they seem to try to do it as environmentally as possible.

What do you mean not all or even most? I think we vote with every dollar we spend! Its "I like this product" or "I don't!"
Anyway, seems like a good sugar choice, better than most.
I would rather purchase from companies that do it right from the start, and in all the products they make. I meant that while there are new products available from the same ol' un-ef companies, I'd really rather not give them my money. In this case, however; I feel like if I purchase this product, it would really keep interest in this type of product line for the company, which would actually impact lives. I hope that makes sense.
