New to CT

I just moved to Old Saybrook with my husband from Oklahoma City.  I would love to hear any recommendations of stuff to do in the area.  We have been here a month now and I really love the area!

Re: New to CT

  • How about the Mystic Seaport?  It is cute with little shops and stuff.  Also, the Mystic Aquarium is fun.  If you feel adventurous, you could always go to Rhode Island to Newport to shop around, or to Watch Hill.  Any of the beaches in CT and RI are also nice.  Welcome to CT!
  • Thank you for the suggestions!  I did hear the aquarium is fun!  I love being so close to the ocean here but meeting people is such a slow process!  Eventually I hope to explore all of CT!
  • Old Saybrook is a great community! I live just 2 towns away. Hammonasset state park in Madison has nice beaches and is a great place to walk, etc. There is a gate fee during the day in the summer months. There are outlets in Westbrook and Clinton for shopping, Bills Seafood in Westbrook is a fun spot spot for outdoor cocktails (food isn't the best- but the atmosphere is worth it). Please let me know if you have other questions about the area...I grew up on the shoreline and just recently moved back to the area.

  • CTJune06...congrats on the baby!   I really do love it here!  I do wish there were easier way to find friends in a new area though!  I work from home so I don't have an office environment to start building friends.  I am lucky that the wives of my husbands coworkers are really nice.  My husband's birthday is next week and I want to take him to a good seafood restaurant around here.  Do you have any recommendations for around the area?
  • Welcome to CT! :-)

Come join us on the CT Tribe - that's where we've all been hanging out. A lot of ladies live on the shoreline and would be able to give you lots of recommendations.

Send an e-mail to Melany for access to the Tribe.  Here is the info.

E-mail me at CTNWModerator@cox.net... It will be much easier since she doesn't come on here anymore! Thanks!

  • We love Lenny and Joe's in Westbrook (On Route 1)... minutes from Old Saybrook. It has a very laid back atmosphere, and is extremely busy on the weekends, but the food and prices are amazing! Their menu changes daily based on what their fishermen caught that day. The only thing I don't recommend is the clam chowder. I've heard that it is very good, but DH is from Boston and loves chowder and hated theirs... it's a little bit more watery than he's used to (not as thick). But all together the food is great! And they offer a "Lite" menu, which is what I always get because the fish isn't breaded and fried, it's broiled with lemon juice and served with either red potatoes or french fries (both good choices) and steamed vegetables.

  • I don't usually post here, but saw your post.  My husband works in Old Saybrook and we live about 15 minutes north.  Essex is a nice town, you can ride the steam train and the riverboat, that's a fun summer activity.  We love Bill's seafood in your area.  You can sit outside and feed the ducks your left over fries.  Their hot lobster rolls are the best!  Old Saybrook is a very pretty area, hope you're enjoying it.
