Travel advice?

Sorry, I am kind of butting in on your local board, but could use some help. Our family is planning on going to SC the year for vacation. We are looking at staying in the Island areas, and traveling into Charleston or Mt. Pleasant when we want to do some other things. We have been looking at staying on Folly Island and Isle of Palms. I know that Sullivan's Island is right there as well. We aren't looking to do anything extravagant, just a little shopping, eating, relaxing. Can anyone from this area give me some clues as to where we might want to stay? Or if you have traveled there, what did/didn't you like?TIA

Re: Travel advice?

  • I have sadly not been to that area of the state yet, so I can't help, but hopefully someone on here can give you some good answers!

  • I don't know much about the islands, but I do know that IOP and Sullivan's are wonderful if you want to rent a house.  From what I can tell, IOP is great for families who want a relaxing beach vacation.  My BIL lived on Sullivan's for a year and I would definitely recommend Poe's Tavern- they have the best burgers ever!

  • I would stay on IOP or Kiawah myself. But those are both a bit a ways from downtown Charleston, which is the area I really love. I like Francis Marion and the Mills House for hotels downtown. There is a lot to do downtown with regard to shopping, relaxing, sightseeing, and eating.

Happy planning and let us know if you have more questions.

  • Poe's Tavern is really cool. Fun place to go when its really warm and sunny. My DH loved the burgers. I just moved here but to me IOP seems like more of a vacation place whereas Sullivan's seems more like a residential community. The rental houses on both are AMAZING! Both are really close to Mt P so you'll have tons of choices for restaurants, shopping and grocery stores. Downtown is lots of fun and easy to get to in about 15-20 mins tops. Kiawah is nice but far away from downtown and there really isn't nothing there but the beach. We haven't made it down to Folly to check it out but I've heard good things about it. I think it may be a bit more touristy (maybe) then the others. If I was going to stay downtown I'd want to stay near King St/Market St/ East Bay.
