Tropical Destinations

So- DH and I are thinking of planning a tropical destination this summer to celebrate our 1 year anniversary, and to "kick off" baby time- plus to celebrate my recovery!

I've been to Puerto Rico, and while fun, would like to go somewhere else- but have no idea WHERE.  I've been thinking the Turks and Caicos, but thought I'd see if anyone had any recommendations.  I've got nothing but time on my hands to plan and research =)

Re: Tropical Destinations

  • Do a carribean island! The beaches are by far the best. soft white powdery sand and turqouise blue water surrounding you. The weather is awsome there. The island I frequent is St Maarten/St Martin. It's half dutch half french. There is lots to do there and many beaches to relax on. April is their busiest time I prefer July/ August but thats because I like esacping here during our hot months. Though any carribean island would be ideal. I want to visit St Lucia and Barbados as well.

Or if you can afford it Bora Bora and stay in the bugalows over the water. (so on my list of places to go)

  • Oh, I want to go to Turks & Caico's too...I've heard it's absolutely beautiful!!
  • We are doing a Carribean cruise in the fall as we couldn't decide on what island we wanted to see most.

  • I'm a Hawaii girl. I love all the islands, and depending on what you want for your vacation (relaxing, touristy cheesy stuff, or being adventurous/active) you can get it on one or all of the islands. I think the beaches are beautiful, and not all are crowded. You can also do it reasonably on a budget. When we've gone, we've rented a condo and purchased food for breakfasts/lunches. This saves money, but you go out for dinners and splurge a little more. Plus, you can munch and pack snacks if you are going to be out for the day and not sure where you'll be.

The nice thing about Hawaii is that it isn't a long flight. There are direct flights from here to several airports in Hawaii.

  • I'm a huge fan of Mexico. DH and I honeymooned in Cabo at a beautiful resort. It was great because Cabo San Lucas has the fun nightlife (although I would steer clear of it during spring break...), and San Jose del Cabo is a lovely older, more subdued town. We did a zip line tour there that was amazing, too. Plus, it's a very quick, cheap flight from Phx.

Puerto Vallarta is supposed to be really beautiful, too.

But Turks and Caicos is on my list of places to visit, too, so I don't think you can go wrong there!

  • Thanks for the recommendations everyone- it's so nice to have something to occupy my time with!

I appreciate everyone's recommendations- what we're looking into now is:

    - Turks and Caicos

    - Bora Bora

    - Fiji

    So Excited!!!

We went to Fiji for our honeymoon and loved it there!  Hopefully, one day we can go back.  We stayed at Matamanoa Island Resort on the tiny island of Matamanoa, which is in the Mamanuca island group.  The island is very small, so it is pretty quiet and very relaxing (not sure if that is what you want).  Children under 12 are not allowed and there are only about 20 private beachfront  bures.   You are pretty much confined to the resort, unless you do an island tour (the island where Cast Away was filmed is very close).  We spent our days snorkeling, playing tennis, kayaking, hiking or relaxing at the beach or pool.  It is a beautiful resort and reasonably priced, as far a Fiji goes.

Hopefully I didn't ramble on too much.  I'm sure you will have a great time wherever you go.  I'm jealous! :)

  • I love to travel and I have been to quite a few island destinations.  One thing to be concerned with it safety when traveling to the Carribean Mexico and Central America, there are definitely some sketchy places.  I recommend Aruba, its beautiful and relatively safe.  Roatan, Honduras was also gorgeous and it is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world if you are into diving and snorkling.  GL with your choice I am sure you will have a fabulous time.
