I think I want to run a 5k.
I am incredibly lazy. I have a bad diet. I like to drink vodka and eat ice cream.
I like walking on the treadmill...I really like walking outside with DD in the stroller. We live in a hilly area and there is a hill we call "the hill of death" because it is sooo steep. Right after I had the baby I could barely walk up it. Now I can do 3 laps around that hill and not even be short of breath. I'd like to push myself a little harder, and I think jogging would do that.
Has anyone done the Couch to 5k and actually RAN a 5k at the end of it?

This is the program I'm thinking of doing...
Also, is there a schedule somewhere for 5k races in Portland?
Re: Am I crazy?
Trust me...you can do it!!! I've heard great things about the C25K (try and checking out the H&F board...they have posters over there that do it often). I think setting a goal like signing up for a race is a great way to motivate yourself. You can do it!
Here's a list of races...you can change the criteria as you wish.

My goal for this year was to get DH to do a 5k with me (he's NOT a runner) and oddly enough he agreed! We're doing an 8k (Bridge to Brew) in April.
Learning to start all over again... Blog
I don't think you're crazy! I've always wanted to be able to run.
In fact, Nandi and I were cleared by the vet to start running next week, and we'll start C25k. I did try a little over a year ago and really liked it. I know that I need to tweak the program a bit for myself because I have exercise induced asthma, so I need to go a bit slower overall. But it's a very do-able program.
I started the Couch to 5k last week and so far, so good. I'm signing up for a 5k in mid-March. I think signing up, giving them my money, will be a good way to make sure I keep at it!
And then I want to get DH to do the Bridge 8K one after that with me.
I have been recently training to run a half marathon. So thats a little over 13 miles, but sadly I wont be able to run the one I want to in Seattle. My main thing thing i am doing is for me I gotta work out 6 our of the 7 days of the week..I started out walking/jogging on the treadmill for about two hours each time...
The one thing though that I found in all the training guides online that everyone sent to me is that when your first starting out walk the first ten minutes of you jog and then always walk the last 15 minutes. But it could be different for everyone.
I loaded my ipod with fast music and went to the gym and put the treadmill on a "random" option were it went from flat land to hills and what not.
I would walk fast (probably 3.8 mph) for about ten minutes and then jog for about two or three full songs. Each day I would up my jogging distance by one or two songs, depending on how I am feeling that day.
I don't jog/run every day, at least two times out of the week I do streghten trainig...
Train for the Race For the Cure in Portland I think its Sunday Sept. 20 this year. Ive done that the past few years but only did the one mile thing.
You can do this! Its simple! I've got astham too and take it slow and work myself up to my goal..very slowly but make progress each day!
I hope to run a 5k too, but I am in really horrible shape right now. Hopefully this time next year I will be able to start seriously training.
The couch to 5K sounds awesome, and I'll have to seriously think about starting it soon!
Good luck to you in your training. I know you can do it!!!
My BFF and I did the 5K WALK portion of the Portland Marathon back in 2008 with no actual physical training before hand.. and survived
I think you could easily run the 5k of the Portland Marathon (it's in the beginning of October) if you started working up to it now
You can do it!!!
I too, am training for a half marathon. Another great place to find running schedules is oregonlive.com/running. It's an awesome blog with a lot of info!!
Good luck!

We just finished the Couch to 5k in December and ran a 5k on New Years. (I made DH do it all with me! ) We actually had fun with the training as well as at the race! I've never been a runner, and I actually used to hate running, but this was definitely a gentle way to build into it. Unfortunately, I ran in the wrong shoes and I have sidelined myself with shin splints But when I recover, we're going to get right back into the groove.
If you can find a running buddy, that always seem to be a good motivator to keep at it. I think I really enjoy the running because 1) I can recap the day with DH, and 2) There are some really pretty places to run around here!
You can do it! It's not crazy at all.
Don't forget to get fitted for shoes.
