When Your Team Loses in the Playoffs...

... how long before you get over it?

My team lost on Sunday and I'm still heartbroken and bitter over it.  Heck, I'm still heartbroken and bitter after losing to the Patriots after a 14-2 regular season and first-round bye a couple of years ago. Crying

Re: When Your Team Loses in the Playoffs...

  • it has only been a week, although it is probably time to get over the loss to the patriots.

for me it depends on the how they lost, who they lost too, who ended up winning the whole thing, etc.

  • I'm usually annoyed and upset for a couple days, but there is always next year. When my team gets knocked out of the playoffs I try to shake it off and root for someone else I like.

  • Like one of the previous posters said, it depends on the circumstances. For me, losing to some teams hurts more than losing to other teams. It also depends on what kind of expectations I had for the season.

I will say this: I had a really tough time getting over my team's losses in some AFC Championship games. I didn't "really" get over those losses until they won a Super Bowl and I could put the other stuff in the past.

I feel your pain on the Chargers. My husband and I were rooting for them this year, because neither of our teams made the playoffs. Now we're rooting for the Colts, I guess.

  • considering the pats lost in first round, i was dissapointed, but i then i said.. well theres always baseball-

when the pats lost to the giants in the superbowl, i was crushed for a week or so

  • I never got my hopes up in the first place so I was over it in a day and a half.

It's a survival tactic I have taught myself over a lifetime of Bengals football.

  • I usually sulk and really mope about it for a few days, and then I get over it and start thinking about next year.

But I'm from Baltimore and I'm an Orioles fan, we're used to losing (frequently) so the Ravens losing this past weekend wasn't as hard to take as one might expect.

OP: You should take it from us.  We know what it is like.  Be thankful that the Chargers had a winning season and leave it at that Wink

  • DH still isn't over the year the Bucs beat the Eagles to go to the super bowl.....but thats mainly because I keep rubbing it in :D
  • Now we are talking I am a diehard NFL fan!

I am a Titans fan, so when we started out 0-6 this year, I learned how to become graceful losing quickly, lol. We did not make the playoffs this year, so I didn't have to suffer. In years passed, it usually bothers me for a few days. Normally in the playoffs there is another team that I can tolerate so I root for them. This year is actually great. The Saints have been a long suffering team so I am happy they have a chance, it is hard not to like and respect Peyton Manning and the Colts are fun to watch, and the Jets are a great story. Minnesota is the only team left that I would hate seeing them win it.

  • If it makes you feel any better, I'm still not over the "wide right" of the Bills loss in the superbowl in 1991. I remember that moment like it was yesterday - and I was like 8 or so at the time. I'm also still not over the skate in the crease loss by the Sabres in the 1999 cup run. All other losses, I'm over rather quickly :)
  • I'm still not over ND not getting the national championship in 1993 because BC beat them....even though we beat FSU.

but pro things I get over quickly

DH, on the other hand, is still ecstatic about this.  Apparently our children have three choices as to where they will attend college if they want him to pay for it: 1)BC, 2)BC, or 3)BC

I know.  I am thankful the Chargers had a winning season -- it was exciting to see them win 11 in a row.  It's not the losing that hurts (we've had many losing seasons -- I was around for 1-15!)  Even the last two years where the Chargers went to the playoffs and lost didn't sting as much.  I guess this time around we (the fans) thought this was our year.  I've read articles and seen interviews during the regular season where players were saying this was the best team they've played on (even compared to the team that went 14-2) and that they thought this was their year.  I credit the Jets, but I guess it just hurts because it was a good team and they just absolutely choked.  Three missed field goals (one of which should have been easy), two interceptions, a gazillion penalties -- I could go on and on... thanks for letting me vent.  I'm definitely looking forward to next year.
  • It depends on the game, I suppose. The Patriots play like crap in their playoff game a couple of weeks ago. It was truly embarrassing. I'm still mad about that. I guess I've been spoiled with the Pats doing so well in the past several years. Sometimes I wish they'd go back to being sucky like the good ole days so the losses were easier to accept. LOL.

Don't even get me started about the Red Sox. It's a perpetual letdown every year.

  • I'm still not fully over when the Mavs blew their NBA Finals lead against the Heat and lost.

For the most part, it takes just a few days. But if it was a bad loss [as in, the team didn't show up or got cheated out of a call that would've made the game], it takes a little longer.

  • My team (Steelers) did not make the playoffs but I am kinda ok with it.  I don't know why it didn't bother me this year.

  • I'm OK with it, too. Even if the Steelers had made it, they would have been eliminated quickly. As I look back on this season, I think more and more that it was over as soon as Troy hurt his knee.

  • eh depends on the season...the Eagles lost in the playoffs this year but most of the key players were hurt and they were just not as good as they could have been this season. So it took me about 30 seconds to get over it...Each season is a little different = )
