Planning a 50th Birthday Party for my Mom

....and I don't know where to start!  It is not a surprise...

We have rented out the local rec center to accommodate all of the guests.  The party will begin at 7, so I would like to do finger foods, not a whole meal.  I dont know where to begin as far as what foods to serve, a theme, decor, etc.  Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!  TIA!

Re: Planning a 50th Birthday Party for my Mom

  • If you want to do finger foods, I'd start the party at 8 pm or mid-afternoon.  7 pm is very much dinnertime and your guests will expect a meal.

Truthfully, I'd start by calling places that cater and see what prices are.  You may want a Paris theme for your mom to remember her great summer there when she was 20, but the local French bakery might be prohibitively expensive.

For decor and themes in general, I'm not a fan.  I think fresh flowers and good food are all you really need.  IMO, if you go much beyond that, it starts to feel like a jr high dance or child's birthday.

Ditto this.  If I went to a party at 7, I would assume it there was dinner (unless you say otherwise).  Also, ditto on the catering.  I don't know what kind of "theme" you have in mind, I like doing very general themes (like south american, provincale, etc) so all the food and decore would center around that theme, but agree that some really nice flowers and table linens (you can rent these very reasonably) go a long way.

  • I agree wtih PP about the time.

Perhaps your mom's likes can dictate theme and food.

Does she like Jazz music?  Maybe you can make an ipod playlist to have it playing through out the party?

Does she absolutely love hummus?  How about serving meditarannean food?

Is she known for always taking photos?  Maybe you can display framed photos of her through out her life of have a slideshow?

Quick tip: if you can help it, try and control the lighting at the rec center.  They're probably bright florecents.  Is it possible to turn off of the ceiling lights and only leave on some lights?  Maybe bring in a few lamps?  It'll help with the part mood.  I promise.

    HTH!  GL!

  • I can tell you what I (intended to do, until shutterfly farked up) for my mother's 65th.

She developed a love of photography, so I took photos she had taken and gave all her friends free reign to pick out a photo and say something to my Mom. Then I put together an album with nice things her friends had said about her.

If your mother isn't into photography, you could take photos from her life, and do something similar. Make the party fun, and lively.

You could go with a jazz theme. Music, black & white decorations with blue lighting, maybe a signature drink to be served, named for her, etc. Heavy apps is fine for 7.

  • My mom's 50th birthday is coming up and I am throwing her a surprise birthday celebration.  I wanted to do something really special so I am having a formal dinner at a restaurant.  It will be in a private room, about 20 people - our immediate family and her closest friends.  I am doing a travel theme since my mom LOVES to travel and has been to some amazing places.  The cake will be travel theme with places she has been and her next destination:  Greece!  For the favors, I got silver luggage tags.    I also plan to either make a photo guestbook with pictures from her trips or print the photos from her trips and display them in the room.

Think about what interests your mom has and how you can incorporate them into the event.
