My kitty is sick

She was acting too nice so I took her to the vet this morning.  The had to sedate her to draw blood which showed she's in the beginning stages of renal failure.  He gave me special food and supplements.  It's probably not good that he gave me a small bag and said they don't normally retest.

Re: My kitty is sick

  • :(  I'm sorry, 6.  Poor kitty.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
  • It's nothing compared to the others issues, but I have had her 10 years. It makes me sad.
  • I'm so sorry to hear that. Cats with early renal failure can live for months or years given the proper diet, meds, etc. Don't give up yet!

  • I'm so sorry.  ::hugs for you and your kitty::
  • 6, what was the actual test that showed renal failure? Remember, FatCat had that too and we changed his diet and his kidney numbers are normal now. Our vet also re-tested (at our request) a few more times.

I'm sorry you're going through this with her. It's hard watching a pet get sick. They're still members of the family.

  • If you don't mind my asking, acute or chronic?

I ask because Cocoa Bear was diagnosed with chronic renal failure when he was 13.  We altered his diet and pilled him twice a day, and he lived until almost 17, when he passed away from cancer.  Good quality of life up until a couple of days before the end.

I don't want to give false hope, but if it is CRF, I've been there, and it's awful to hear at first, but completely manageable.

If you have questions, you can always page/PM me.  GL and hang in there.

  • Don't give up yet. We have a cat that we got the month before youngest DD was born ( 17 years ).  She has dealt with this, and also had a stroke about 3 years ago that we didn't think she would live through. She is still going, laying on my router right now annoying the crap out of me. lol.
  • I'm glad you didn't wait three days to take her to the doctor.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. :(

  • Thanks for the hope.  Her potassium was low and the total bilirubin and something else was off.  I didn't ask acute or chronic.  I have k/d food and some supplement.  We'll just see what happens.

She's pretty pathetic right now- out cold, big hump from the fluids they gave, and two shaved paws.  I should go check on her.

  • MIL's cat was diagnosed with renal failure three or four years ago and has been on a special diet ever since. She'll be 20 later this year. So don't give up hope!
  • FatCat's BUN (urine concentration test) was off and his creatnine was really high. Both have come down. He's on kitten food now and no meds. Also, our vet mentioned that kidney numbers are very much an in-the-moment type of number. I'm surprised they're not re-testing. It's when the numbers chronically stay elevated that they diagnose renal failure.

  • Is the small bag like a kitty body bag?  I'm confused for the reason behind the small bag.
  • I'm so sorry.

You can add my parents' old cat to the list of cats diagnosed with renal failure who managed to live for quite awhile on a special diet.  Cats are surprisingly tough.
