We might move in August

The director at DH's school owns a house that is currently being rented by the school's librarian, who is moving out in May.  She doesn't want to rent to someone she doesn't know, so she made DH a very, very attractive offer.  We'd get a single family house, 1700 sf, large yard, deck, 1.5 or 2.5 bathrooms (I don't remember), three bedrooms, large eat-in kitchen that was just remodeled, dining room & living room plus a family room, a two-car garage, dishwasher(!!!!), washer and dryer that doesn't involve me going outside and downstairs to the basement.  For about an extra $125/month than we pay now.  For twice the space.  It'd be slightly closer for us for work too.  Another extra? 5 minutes from my favorite sushi place :)

We've been there before, but we're going to go take a look again soon. As much as I hate moving, it's very tempting for twice the space.  My mom thinks the garage is worth the extra rent alone.  I've never parked in a garage before so I don't know what I'm missing.  You know I'm already decorating it in my head.

  • Maybe you could talk him down on price by offering up your skillz? It's worth a shot!

  • Parking in a garage during winter and not having to scrape your car or spend as much time waiting for it to heat up is a thing of beauty. Just sayin'.

  • Yay for an eat-in kitchen!

Although would the extra $125/month cut into your saving for buying a house too much?  For me it would be hard to choose between staying put and being able to buy sooner and moving and prolonging being a homeowner. But I also just really hate moving.

  • The houses in the neighborhood go for around $1600/month.  She offered $1200, but she's willing to negotiate for $1200 + all utilities, which would bring it to about $125 more than we pay now.

  • a garage, where is snows from nov - march, is TOTALLY worth it.

just think, no more clearing snow off your car at 6 am.  no more scraping ice off your windshield.

makes me all quiverrful just thinking about it.

  • I thought about that too, Zsa.  $1500 extra a year isn't going to cut into saving *that* much.  We'd probably save $125/month by eating out less just because of the dishwasher.

    This.

And between this, the dishwasher and the washer/dryer in the house - - your life will change drastically and it will be totally worth it.

  • If they include utilities, that's a pretty good deal. Heating up a house in the winter is much more expensive than a plain ol' apartment!

    only if they include utilities.

    Good luck!

  • Woohoo.  Sounds very nice.
