what's your favorite non-dairy milk?

so i recently found out that i'm slightly allergic to dairy and am trying to cut back like crazy on my dairy intake. i'm pretty much addicted to cereal for breakfast (healthy kind!) and eat it daily...and i'm not ready to give that up, so i'm going to try switching to other forms of 'milk'.

yesterday i bought organic rice milk and organic almond milk...both in 'original' flavor.

if you ever drink non-dairy milk, what's your favorite? and do you like original or vanilla or some other flavor?

thanks!

Re: what's your favorite non-dairy milk?

  • Unsweetened vanilla hemp milk - Living Harvest brand.

    Coconut milk is also delicious.

  • I haven't tried a lot but for soy milk I really prefer Pacific Foods, they are located in Tualatin, but you can find their stuff in lots of stores locally.

  • I like Blue Diamond almond milk, unsweetened original flavor.  I pretty much only use it in chai lattes and dh uses it in his cereal.
  • I've only had soy milk.  I'd love to try almond milk, but seeing as how I'm allergic to nuts that doesn't make a lot of sense.  : )  I tend to like the vanilla flavors the best, because I usually only use milk in coffee.  Occasionally, I'll make hot cereal like cream of wheat or cream of rice and use vanilla soy milk instead of water or regular milk and OMG it's soooooo good.
  • Vanilla flavored Publix (store brand) soymilk or Vanilla Almond Breeze (I think).
  • Are you allergic to dairy or lactose? if it is the latter, the buy some lactaid milk (or the knock off version) and continue eating your cereal as normal.  I can't tast the difference at all! I thought I was allergic to milk, but I had my allergy test redone in sept and found out its not an actual allergy to the dairy, just the lactose.

Good luck, I love soy in my lattes, or choc soy just to drink, but on my cereal I like plain old lactaid 2%.

  • I like rice milk better than soy.  I drink original.  I only use it for cereal, baking, etc.  I never really liked drinking a glass of it.
  • Are you allergic to lactose? If so, then you are like my dad, and he drinks lactose-free milk (as a plus, it also lasts much longer in the fridge so you don't wind up throwing out bad milk).  You can usually find it right with the regular milk display in the supermarket.

I usually use soymilk, but I am thinking about switching to rice or almond the next time I need to buy.  My DH, who is a real meat and potatoes and drinking milk right from the carton kind of guy, has been known to steal my soymilk so I guess that it must taste pretty good to just about anyone!

  • I love almond milk! I buy the unsweetened plain and unsweetened vanilla.
  • I'm lactose intolerant and I use soy milk.  I haven't tried any other the other alternatives though, so I can't say it's the best.

I get Wegman's organic brand (switched from 8th Continent to avoid GMO soy).  MIL buys Silk - I think that brand has a chalky flavor.  My grandma drank Lactaid - I don't like the taste of that either.

I can't answer your question about the flavorings because I've never cared for flavored milk, even as a kid.

  • As a vegan, I don't consume any dairy products. lol I love love LOVE Almond Breeze, the original and vanilla are both great. Plus it doesn't contain saturated fat and won't cause cancer like the hormones in animal milk will. I also like Silk Soymilk and Knudsen Soymilk. I'm a big fan of the vanilla flavors for those.

Other things to consider, since dairy no longer fits into your lifestyle are butter, cheese, cream cheese, sour cream and coffee creamer alternatives. My favorite butter alternative is definitely Earth Balance. I swear by it and it tastes amazing!

Also, it might be easier to do some google searches of "vegan alternatives" because none of those products will contain any dairy or secret dairy ingredients like casein. Here is one of the sites that pops up: http://www.theanimalspirit.com/substitutes.html

I hope this was helpful! *hugs*

  • thanks everyone so much for the suggestions! and thanks for the site rockrchk..i'll check it out :)

i should have specified...it's the dairy NOT the lactose that i'm allergic to :( and it's not SUPER allergic, just 'reactive' lol, but pretty highly according to my blood allergy testing i had done...so i'm trying to limit the amount of dairy i have.

i'd also prefer to steer clear of soy because i've read a lot of iffy articles on soy and just don't want to end up eating too much of it, since it's so easy to do being a vegetarian and all :)

thanks again everyone!! and if anyone else has any thoughts...keep em coming!

  • Love vanilla hemp milk - Tempt/Living Harvest brand.  I'm sensitive to soy so I don't use soymilk except for baking but rarely.

I also second the rec for Earth Balance.

  • Organic unsweetened almond milk - YUM. I never drank milk and I still don't drink the almond milk - I use it to wet my cereal. Smile
  • I'm newly in love with Vanilla and Chocolate hemp milk.  I think the brand is Tempt.

When I try non-dairy milks, I always go for the vanilla flavor first, then branch from there.

  • I fancy almond breeze.  I also just bought pacific foods almond milk this weekend but haven't tried it yet.  It's the first time I saw it at the market which is why I bought it.
  • I have been drinking whole foods brand 365 organic soy milk, plain. Very tasty IMO. I  want to try the vanilla & chocolate.
