So, as I mentioned in the past, DH and I are TTC (we started in Oct.), but after not getting my period for 3 months, I made an appt. with my OB/GYN. He ran some blood work and I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) just last week. =/ For those of you who don't know what it is, it's a syndrome that effects your insulin level, which in turn effects your hormone levels, therefore your body is not producing enough of the hormone that lets you ovulate. So, he prescribed a med (Metformin) to take (along with a strict diet, which I'm happy to report I've been sticking to for over a week and lost 3 lbs.) which will straigten out my insulin level and hopefully allow me to ovulate regularly. *sigh* I will be purchasing an ovulation kit soon, so that will help us out during this process. Anyway, just wanted to share my story. I've done a lot of reading on this and it seems fairly common, so if you or anyone you know was diagnosed with PCOS, feel free to share your story.
Thanks for "listening"...

Re: A TTC update...
You should check out the GP board on the Nest. There are a lot of girls there with PCOS, I'm sure they would be happy to share their stories.
Sending baby dust your way!!!
I agree with Danielle. Definitely join the GP Board...I have not been on much since I was put on Lupron (hence postponing my TTC) but it's a great group of ladies.
I hope the metformin works effectively and hope you get your BFP soon.

Helene: Metformin isn't too terrible, so far. I have had a few bouts of the big "D" (sorry for TMI), but other than that, I feel fine...thank goodness. As for the diet...he just told me to eat better and exercise, but I have been trying to eat low fat. I can never do carb-free...I'm too much of a carb junkie, so low fat seems to work for me. If you don't mind I ask, why are you on Metformin? Were you diagnosed with PCOS? I know it is also prescribed for Type II Diabetes.
Bubblegum Explosion
You may not even remember me, but I decided to peek in & lurk while I had a moment tonight & saw this post & felt I should share...
I was diagnosed w/PCOS back in 2001, long before TTC. I went on a low carb diet simultaneously when I started taking metformin & lost about 22 lbs in 2 months. When we did TTC I lost our first baby & suspect it was associated w/low progesterone which sometimes occurs with PCOS, so that's something to discuss w/your OB when you get your BFP. When we TTC again my dosage was increased & I used a progesterone cream (OTC) after I ovulated & stayed on Metformin for the first 12 weeks. Feel free to PM if you have specific questions. GL as you TTC!
lol, I don't even think the carbs are as bad as foods that are just fatty. Some people don't get the s/e as bad, I was one of the unlucky ones lol. I'm on Metformin for my "insulin resistance" (it's like borderline diabetic)
Thanks for all the info ladies!
Christine: Thanks for sharing your story. I will definitely mention my progesterone level to my Dr. when I go back to see him in a few months.
