DH & I are bored & looking for a change of scenery for a long weekend getaway. We've already been to Galena, and Lake Geneva seems boring in the winter. We would like to take a drive within a few hours from Chicago, and see something fun and unique, and on the cheap. We are also willing to take an Amtrak.
For example, online we ran across this little town in WI called Mount Horeb where they have a bunch of funny-looking trolls carved out of trees all along the streets of the town. Cute photos I'm sure.
Another example - remember that Girls Next Door episode where they took a road trip & visited the bubble gum alley and went to that theme hotel where each room had a different theme like a cave or a jungle. And the dinner restaurant was all Barbie pink everywhere.
Any ideas of where we can visit? Something funny and interesting for the winter boring blues!!!
Re: help with road trip ideas from Chicago
I was going to suggest The House on the Rock by Madison, WI but they are only open May 1 - Nov 1. I always love going to Door County in any season. It's about a 5 hour drive. Or Washington Island (north of Door County), no cars on that island.
Starved Rock Park out in Ottawa, IL. Weekend trip to Springfield, IL. I went there with my grandpa 2 years ago in April, he's from there so we had reason to go but there was a lot of cool stuff to see.
How about a trip up to Kenosha to take a tour of the Jelly Belly factory? LOL! H and I are doing that in a few weekends. On the way we're stopping at Mars Cheese Castle (which we always do whenever we happen to be up north) and in Milwaukee for brats at the Brathouse.
I know it sounds lame but it will be fun to get out of town! hahahaha!
I'm from Milwaukee, soooo not lame!
OMG! Do you love the Brathouse? Brats will never be the same after having them there - LOL! And, they bring you two beers at a time when you order one!
If you do decide to go to Mount Horeb, make sure you take a tour of Cave Of The Mounds.

Here's something lame, I've never been to the Brat House I'm from Milwaukee & there are a ton of places up there that have killer brats, plus my dad is a great griller!
