road trip ideas from Chicago?
DH & I are bored & looking for a change of scenery for a long weekend getaway. We've already been to Galena, and Lake Geneva seems boring in the winter. We would like to take a drive within a few hours from Chicago, and see something fun and unique, and on the cheap. We are also willing to take an Amtrak.
For example, online we ran across this little town in WI called Mount Horeb where they have a bunch of funny-looking trolls carved out of trees all along the streets of the town. Cute photos I'm sure.
Another example - remember that Girls Next Door episode where they took a road trip & visited the bubble gum alley and went to that theme hotel where each room had a different theme like a cave or a jungle. And the dinner restaurant was all Barbie pink everywhere.
Any ideas of where we can visit?? Something funny and interesting for the winter boring blues!

A friend of mine works at an awesome restaurant/bar in Mount Horeb called The Grumpy Troll There are also a lot of wineries near-by, so you could stop at a bunch of those too. Then when you are done, you can stop at the Mustard Museum in Middleton! (http://www.mustardweb.com/).
If you do end up heading to the Madison area, I would recommend taking I-90 into Rockford instead of I-94 through Milwaukee...much less traffic!
I live about 20 minutes from there, and used to live right in town. There are a lot of shops in there with unique stuff.
I love the Italian restaurant there. Very authentic. Sole Sapori is the name of it.
The Mustard Museum moved from Mount Horeb to Middleton recently, and it's a fun visit. There's also....

http://www.wollersheim.com/ This is little ways from Mount Horeb, but it's an awesome winery!!! So beautiful.

Have fun, and you'll have to let us know about your trip.
I never thought of it until just now, but the Flake Out Festival is in the Wisconsin Dells this weekend. I don't know if you wanted to go on your trip this soon. It's fun though.
