DH & I are bored & looking for a change of scenery for a long weekend getaway. We've already been to Galena, and Lake Geneva seems boring in the winter. We would like to take a drive within a few hours from Chicago, and see something fun and unique, and on the cheap. We are also willing to take an Amtrak.
For example, online we ran across this little town in WI called Mount Horeb where they have a bunch of funny-looking trolls carved out of trees all along the streets of the town. Sounds kinda cute.
Another example - remember that Girls Next Door episode where they took a road trip & visited the bubble gum alley and went to that theme hotel where each room had a different theme like a cave or a jungle. And the dinner restaurant was all Barbie pink everywhere.
Any ideas of where we can visit? Something funny and interesting for the winter boring blues!
Re: need ideas for roadtrip from Chicago
If you like Barbies, the Children's Museum of Indianapolis is having a Barbie Fashion exhibit.

Hrm, I don't know about unique, but Madison WI could be a nice visit?
What about Logansport? There is a really cute B&B there and there is a carousel in a park, but I don't know if it is open in the winter?
There is also a dairy farm off of I65 in northern Indiana that could make for a neat visit.
Shipshewana (sp?) is Amish country in northern Indiana that can be interesting to visit if you've never experienced that.
There is also a new indoor water park near Shipshie (you spelled it right, this is just the local nickname!) that is a hotel too, as there are no real hotels in downtown Shipshie. http://www.splashuniverse.com/
If can also highly recomend New Buffalo, MI. DH and I went there on our mini-moon right after our wedding and had a fantastic time! We stayed at the Harbor Grande and had a blast. I can rec lots of restaurants there too. http://www.harborgrand.com/ There are also several B and Bs in New Buffalo, though DH and I though this hotel was the best of both worlds--small and personal, but private too. There are also a lot of great vinyards in SW Michigan, if you are in to that sort of thing.
I know this is sort of vague, so please let me know if you'd like more details!
