Hi, Indiana Nesties! Colorado Nestie here... My DH just got a pretty good job offer from a company in Shelbyville so we are considering moving. The problem is I know nothing about the Indianapolis area at all... So I would love to have some advice.
What areas should we consider for buying a house? If we did live in Shelbyville, would it cut us off from going to Indianapolis a lot? (We are totally open to other suburbs, as long as they are a reasonable commute to Shelbybille.) We are interested in finding a place with good schools, since I have a DS who will be going to kindergarten soon (and a DD 2.5 years behind him).
We are interested not only in areas of town/suburbs, but also even in specific subdivisions, if you could help that way.
Any advice you could give us about where to consider would be appreciated! Thanks, ladies!
Re: possibly moving to Indianapolis area - questions
Indianapolis definitely isn't a 5 minute drive from Shelbyville, so if you're looking for constant/easy access to Indy you'll want to find a home outside of Shelbyville. What kind of a community are you looking for? I would recommend looking Johnson County. Personally, I like Franklin and the Greenwood/Center Grove areas. All three of those areas are nice, but overall I would say you can get more house for your money from Franklin as it is a little further from Indy (but closer to Shelbyville) than say Greenwood and Center Grove.
GL!
Well, first Congrats on the job offer!
I lived in shelbyville when i was little, and ive lived all over indianapolis, and i live in greenwood now. Im in the process of buying a home. The areas that we are looking in are: Greenwood, Center grove, Franklin, Whiteland, New Whiteland, bargersville, and Shelbyville. These areas are all very close to each other.
Shelbyville specifically has really good schools. it is also super close to Greenfield, which has, what i think is the best hospital in the indy area.
Shelbyville is about 35 minutes from Indianapolis specifically only because of the way interstates are. i can get from greenwood to Shelbyville in 25 minutes. the drive is all country and is really nice.
Shelbyville recently added a new casino, the Indiana Live casino, its pretty nice, its connected to the indiana dunes horse racing. in shelbyville, they also have an amazing ice cream place called "comptons- cow palace" sounds lame, i know. but they have ice cream called "death by chocolate" which is the best thing ive ever tasted
Shelbyville really is a good place to live, no joke. There are HUGE malls close by in Greenwood and an AMAZING mall in Edinburg. and downtown is really not that far, if you know ways around interstates.
Shelbyville homes are pretty good priced too, im sure you could find a nice home there. i have heard that taxes are a little high than the surrounding areas though.
Well, i hope i answered a lot of your questions. if you have anymore, let me know!
Honestly, it's not that far of a drive to get back to Indianapolis. I think it would depend on how much of a commute you want to have either way - work or fun. How far do you guys want to drive?
Shelbyville is a typical suburban town with decent schools, but you could also more to one of the neighboring cities for other options as well.
The housing is very affordable in Shelbyville and in the surrounding areas on the southside and there are decent schools in the area too
And I agree about Cow Palace - we used to drive from Greenfield to go get ice cream. There used to be a really good Italian restaurant too, but now they only have the one restaurant on the east side of Indy
Ditto PPers...
I have friends that live in Franklin and feel like it's the perfect balance between Indy and small town living... the schools in both areas are good and the communities are what you make them in terms of activities, etc and you are close to Indy for the arts, shopping, etc...
Congrats!!!
