We are going to be planting shrubs and flowering plants around our front porch this spring/summer. I live up north where it can get very hot in the summer, but is very very VERY cold in the winter! The front of our home faces North so we get some sun on that side, but not an excessive amount, so I think plants that do well in shade would do the best. I also would really like to at least have a few of the plants in bloom for most of the summer...I don't really know anything about plants, so does anyone have a suggestions?
Re: Plant Recommendations
Most perennial plants have a very brief bloom- sometimes just a few days, but some bloom over 2 or 3 months. If you want continual color, plant annuals- they bloom until they die (they don't come back next year) or plant a variety of perennials so when one plant is finished blooming, something else will begin, and you'll always have something blooming. A CPLD can make a map of your property and provide you with a planting plan and list of plants to meet your criteria.
The only single plant I can think of right now off the top of my head for all-season bloom that will not die over the winter is roses.
As pp said, you should look into a landscape designer/architect. It will be the best gardening money you'll spend.
S/he will check your soil, light, ask you what you're looking for in plants and shrubs (color, bloom time, maintenance, etc) and then come up with plans for you.
I agree w/ getting a landscape designer. I think it only cost me about $300 and it was money well spent.
I am in Chicago so cold winters/hot summers and here are my favorite long bloomers:
knockout rose (shrub, not a perennial)
geranium rozanne
day lillies (but only specific kinds rebloom)
coneflower
Goldsturm Rudbeckia
pincushion flower--butterfly blue
